OUR LADY OF SORROWS

“WHAT THY BLISS, HOW DEEP THY SORROWS,

MOTHER, THOU ALONE CANST KNOW.”

THE trials which Our Blessed

Lady had to undergo should

convince us of the necessity of

suffering in this life. It is easy

to understand the sufferings of

Our Blessed Lord, since He took

upon Himself the sins of the

world, but why should His

Mother, who was never sullied

by the least stain of sin, be called

upon bear the cross? Because as

child of Adam she was subject

to the ills of nature —it was by

special privilege of God’s grace

that she was conceived and born

free from the stain of Original

Sin —and God permitted her to

suffer in order that her trials

might be lesson to us in the

value of suffering and sacrifice,

and her fortitude an example of

Christian virtue.

Her trials seem to have been mainly of the

soul, trials that were foretold to her by the

prophet Simeon in the words: “And thy own soul

sword shall pierce, that the thoughts of many

hearts may he revealed.” These words were

borne out by subsequent events;

Simeon’s prophecy was fulfilled

to the letter, for sword of sor-

row did indeed pierce the soul of

Our Blessed Lady. And in com-

parison with anguish of soul,

physical suffering is as nothing.

All that her Divine Son suffered

in the members of His Body on

Calvary, Mary suffered in her

mind and heart, offering all with

Him for the redemption of the

world.

OUR LADY OF SORROWS.

In recognition of the reality

of her spiritual martyrdom, the

Church salutes her by the title

Queen of Martyrs, and pays her

the homage of commemorating

her many trials in special Feast.

PRAYER.

God, at Whose passion, according to the prophecy of

Simeon, sword of sorrow did pierce through the most

sweet soul of the glorious Virgin and Mother Mary;

mercifully grant that we who devoutly celebrate her

transfixion and suffering, may, through the intercession

of the glorious merits and prayers of all the saints who

faithfully stand beneath Thy cross, obtain the blessed

fruit of Thy passion. Amen.

OUR LADY OF SORROWS.

Feast September 15th.
