BIOGRAPHY.

MEMOIR OF THE LATE MIL WM. APPLETON*

(Concluded from page 6, vol. W.)

ON Sunday, June 1, Mr. Appleton preached at Luton three time#,

and administered the sacrament, which services closed his valuable labours

in the church below. He left home on Monday morning, June 2, in

one-horse chaise, and in passing through St. Albans, on his way to London,

the horse, by sudden motion of his head, drew the reins out of his hands.

Mr. A. apprehending danger, leaped out to recover them, and by so doing

broke his leg, and dislocated his ancle bone. He was immediately con-

veyed to the house of one of our friends, where every thing that was pos-

sible was done for his accommodation. Mr. Lusher, who went September

(1817), on mission to Canada, and who was at Si. Alban when the ac-

cident happened, writes to friend as follows:

On entering the room, to which he had been conveyed, found him

stretched upon the bed, attended by some of our friends and the surgeon,

who was preparing to perform the agonizing operation of setting his dread-

fully fractured leg. The scene of suffering which presented itself; the

probable consequences which anticipated, and other considerations,

concurred to overpower my mind, that for few moments was unable to

speak. went, however, to his bedside, and said to him, â€˜I am sorry, Sir,

to find you in such circumstances.’ He seized my hand, and with smiling

countenance, and in manner which shall never forget, replied, Jhe

Lord he is God! The Lord he is God !’ His mind appeared to be per-

fectly tranquil and happy; indeed such strong faith, such patient resigna-

tion and fortitude, as he manifested during the whole of the painful operation,

which lasted full two hours, had never before witnessed. Contemplating

the superlative excellency of our holy religion, as exemplified lhe

and patience of our friend, could hot help saying within myself. What

bath’the world to equal this'l The religion of Jesus is indeed the one

thing needful/ observed to him, this is one of those mysterious dispen-

sations of Providence to which you have, no doubt, frequently adverted in

vour public ministrations; one of the all things’ which you have repre
