THE WALLET

Published weekly as Supplement to the “ Weekly Mail,” and

[No. 8.

THE FORTUNES OF THE FAIRBOURNS.

BY ABRAHAM FOREST.

(Continued, from page 203.

The change from the orderly quiet ship to the hubbub of such

street as the one Captain Fairbourn and Don Piento entered

was not new to the captain, though it must always be strange to

an Englishman. They landed at the custom-house stairs, and

passed through the yard, which was comparatively quiet. On

emerging from the great gates into the main street, the scene was

marvellous. The street itself was extremely narrow. In the

middle of it ran what would have been gutter in England, but

this was full of clear running water. The houses were very high,

and closely built, so that walking in the street you were in com-

plete shade. There were many windows in all the houses, but

none of them glazed, and black heads of every variety were

hanging out in clusters, calling and grimacing to those below. The

houses seemed full to overflowing. Most of the small black

children had no clothing on, and through the open doorways the

captain caught sight of many no longer children with very little

more on them than the babies. The captain and Don Piento

had to push their way through this motley crowd, which clustered as

thick about the doors as at the windows. All talked and screeched

to each other, at the top of their voices, so that sometimes it was

impossible to hear oneself speak. The languid little Brazilian did

not often come to this lower part of the town, which was princi-

pally inhabited by free blacks, worn-out slaves, Chinamen, and

apparently every other noisy creature under heaven. Going

onward up the street, they came to an open space or square, where
