Fix this textOUR FRIENDS, AND OURSELVES:
Fix this text\X7E Catholics believe so intensely in
Fix this text1 the life beyond that for us death
Fix this textdoes not make the huge difference that
Fix this textothers would have us suppose. Those
Fix this textwho have crossed over to that other life
Fix this textare themselves alive. We call it life,
Fix this textand a real life we believe it to be. For
Fix this textus Catholics, indeed, there is no such
Fix this textthing as death in the sense that it means
Fix this textthe absolute cutting off of all regard for
Fix this textthe life that is this side of eternity. We
Fix this textask the prayers of those whom we know
Fix this textto be beloved of God, nor does it matter
Fix this textwhether they be alive or dead, since we
Fix this textsuppose them always to remain human
Fix this textenough to be interested in human things.
Fix this textHence it is that we ask the good to pray
Fix this textfor us when we meet them in our life
Fix this texthere; and when we learn that they have
Fix this textgone over into the fuller and ampler life
Fix this textthat is above, we do not say that then
Fix this textthey cannot be asked to help us, but
Fix this textrather that their prayers are far more
Fix this textlikely to have weight with God, and that
Fix this textthey will be more interested in our
Fix this textwelfare.
Fix this textHence it is that the Catholic Church
Fix this texthas always advocated prayers to the
Fix this textsaints. Just because the saints are dead,
Fix this textwhy should we cease to beg their inter-
Fix this textcession? So, again, is it with those who
Fix this textare in Purgatory. We prayed for them
Fix this textwhen they were alive; in their troubles,
Fix this textin their day of trial, we rememberd them
Fix this textbefore God; why now that they are still
Fix this textin a state of trial should we put aside
Fix this texttheir claims on us?
Fix this textHow do we know that our prayers can
Fix this textbe of any avail to the dead? How do
Fix this textwe know that when they were alive, our
Fix this textprayers were of any use to them? We
Fix this texttrusted in the mercy of God, and fol-
Fix this textlowed the practice of Christian tradition;
Fix this textso now we trust in God’s compassion and
Fix this textadopt the Christian inheritance.
Fix this textIt's easy and takes two shakes of a lamb's tail!
