RED HILL

OUTLOOK

newsletter issued by the

Canberra Grammar School

Vol. No.

JUNE, 1979

THE HEADMASTER REPORTS

If we had been present at the ceremony on the sth December,

1929, when the Prime Minister of the time, the Right Honourable

Stanley Bruce, laid the Foundation Stone of the School, it would

have been very difficult to imagine the future of the School.

There was comparatively small crowd present beneath the

bunting decorating the fabric, that had already been built. The

view of the surrounding countryside showed few signs of life and

there was little to convince people that the Nation's Capital

would grow.

From that hopeful and faithful start school has grown, which

now has nearly 1,200 students enrolled, which sets out to meet

the academic and developmental needs of the boys and girls

concerned. With the completion of the School Hall and the Music

Centre, which was opened officially by the Governor-General on

the 3rd May, we now have school with admirable facilities.

THE HEADMASTER, MR P.J. McKEOWN

with (L to R) D.C. Gration, J.A. Taylor and R.M. Fleeton

Editor's Note: 1978 saw the completion of Mr McKeown's twentieth year

of service as Headmaster of the School

Important steps still remain to be taken and the Junior School

Hall is urgently needed, as well as single-room accommodation

in the Boarding Houses. Apart from the bricks and mortar, which

require constant maintenance and of course will need adding to,

the future of the School must be cared for in other ways.

To guarantee its continuing growth and its capacity to meet an

expanding demand for places, the School's Board of Management

has decided to launch the Canberra Grammar School Foundation

in this Jubilee Year. The aim of the Foundation will be basically

to allow for the raising of funds and the investment of these over

the years, so that the future of the School will be made more

secure against any changes of policy that might occur in the

governmental funding of Independent Schools. It is envisaged

that those who have benefited from the work of the School

already might help those who are yet to come. The Foundation

will have two sections; one will deal with buildings and money

given for this purpose will be tax free, and the other section will

be without that benefit but which will help the very important

educational needs of the School. Two methods of giving have

been envisaged; the first is done by giving directly for number

of years, and the second is by bequest through person's Will.

The Foundation, with firm support, can be great source of

strength for the future and will in time help significantly to

stabilize fees, to encourage the quality of teaching in the School

and maintain the standard of our facilities. The present health of

the School has been much dependent upon the help of Parents

and Old Boys in the past and this new venture of the Canberra

Grammar School will, hope, receive great backing from all the

friends of the School.

THE PRIME MINISTER

LAUNCHES OUR JUBILEE YEAR

The Jubilee Year of Canberra Grammar School was ushered in

at special Speech Day Ceremony on Tuesday December 5,1978,

exactly 50 years after the unveiling of the original Foundation

Stone by the then Prime Minister, Mr S.M. Bruce. To mark the

occasion, the present Prime Minister was invited to unveil the

Commemorative Stone, to present the prizes, and to deliver the

Speech Day Address.

The Jubilee Commemorative Stone Laid by The Prime Minister

on 5th December 1978

The ceremony was held in fine weather in the School Quad-

rangle at 6.30 p.m. in the presence of very large audience,

consisting of members of the Board of Management, the 700

members of the School, and approximately 800 visitors.

The Chairman of the Board welcomed visitors and especially

the Prime Minister on what was for the School most auspicious

occasion, and declared the Jubilee Year open.
