Fix this textTHE HEADMASTER REPORTS
Fix this textIf we had been present at the ceremony on the sth December,
Fix this text1929, when the Prime Minister of the time, the Right Honourable
Fix this textStanley Bruce, laid the Foundation Stone of the School, it would
Fix this texthave been very difficult to imagine the future of the School.
Fix this textThere was a comparatively small crowd present beneath the
Fix this textbunting decorating the fabric, that had already been built. The
Fix this textview of the surrounding countryside showed few signs of life and
Fix this textthere was little to convince people that the Nation's Capital
Fix this textwould grow.
Fix this textFrom that hopeful and faithful start a school has grown, which
Fix this textnow has nearly 1,200 students enrolled, which sets out to meet
Fix this textthe academic and developmental needs of the boys and girls
Fix this textconcerned. With the completion of the School Hall and the Music
Fix this textCentre, which was opened officially by the Governor-General on
Fix this textthe 3rd May, we now have a school with admirable facilities.
Fix this textTHE HEADMASTER, MR P.J. McKEOWN
Fix this textwith (L to R) D.C. Gration, J.A. Taylor and R.M. Fleeton
Fix this textEditor's Note: 1978 saw the completion of Mr McKeown's twentieth year
Fix this textof service as Headmaster of the School
Fix this textImportant steps still remain to be taken and the Junior School
Fix this textHall is urgently needed, as well as single-room accommodation
Fix this textin the Boarding Houses. Apart from the bricks and mortar, which
Fix this textrequire constant maintenance and of course will need adding to,
Fix this textthe future of the School must be cared for in other ways.
Fix this textTo guarantee its continuing growth and its capacity to meet an
Fix this textexpanding demand for places, the School's Board of Management
Fix this texthas decided to launch the Canberra Grammar School Foundation
Fix this textin this Jubilee Year. The aim of the Foundation will be basically
Fix this textto allow for the raising of funds and the investment of these over
Fix this textthe years, so that the future of the School will be made more
Fix this textsecure against any changes of policy that might occur in the
Fix this textgovernmental funding of Independent Schools. It is envisaged
Fix this textthat those who have benefited from the work of the School
Fix this textalready might help those who are yet to come. The Foundation
Fix this textwill have two sections; one will deal with buildings and money
Fix this textgiven for this purpose will be tax free, and the other section will
Fix this textbe without that benefit but which will help the very important
Fix this texteducational needs of the School. Two methods of giving have
Fix this textbeen envisaged; the first is done by giving directly for a number
Fix this textof years, and the second is by bequest through a person's Will.
Fix this textThe Foundation, with firm support, can be a great source of
Fix this textstrength for the future and will in time help significantly to
Fix this textstabilize fees, to encourage the quality of teaching in the School
Fix this textand maintain the standard of our facilities. The present health of
Fix this textthe School has been much dependent upon the help of Parents
Fix this textand Old Boys in the past and this new venture of the Canberra
Fix this textGrammar School will, I hope, receive great backing from all the
Fix this textfriends of the School.

Fix this textoccasion, the present Prime Minister was invited to unveil the
Fix this textCommemorative Stone, to present the prizes, and to deliver the

Fix this texton 5th December 1978
Fix this textThe ceremony was held in fine weather in the School Quad-
Fix this textrangle at 6.30 p.m. in the presence of a very large audience,
Fix this textconsisting of members of the Board of Management, the 700
