RED HILL

OUTLOOK

newsletter issued by the

Canberra Grammar School

Vol. No.

JUNE, 1982

THE HEADMASTER

REPORTS:—

At this time, much interest is

centred on the possibility of

third Anglican School coming

into being in the A.C.T. This in-

terest comes partly from there

being so many parents in Can-

berra who are keen to have their

children educated at an Inde-

pendent School and presently

cannot find place for them at

Canberra Grammar School nor

at Canberra Church of England

Girls' Grammar School. So far

there are 1,600 children listed

for the new school, which indi-

cates something of the demand

for independent schooling.

But there has been oppos-

ition to the idea, as well as

support. Judging by the letters

in the press, some teachers in

Government Schools and some

parents with children there are

concerned because they as-

sume that Government funds

will be diverted from the

schools in which they are in-

volved. It is probably not as

simple as that and other issues

get caught up in the debate

because everyone can see after

reflection that if Independent

Schools closed, there would be

less money available for Gov-

ernment Schools because it

would cost more to educate

those children moving to Gov-

ernment Schools. At the

moment 13% of the funds pro-

vided for education go to Indep-

endent Schools, that educate

overall 23% of the nation's

children, so it is clear that the

Government is not providing

disproportionate amount of

funds to Independent Schools.

There are 27.1% of secondary

students in Australia being edu-

cated in Independent Schools,

which is an increase of 2.9% or

95,900 students in the last ten

years. Such an increase cannot

be simply due to comparison

of resources, as some com-

mentators suggest, because the

teacher-pupil ratio in Govern-

ment Schools is 12.25, as com-

pared with 15.10 in Indepen-

dent Schools.

The future of the nation

demands that we have the very

best schools possible, regard-

less of whether they are Gov-

ernment or Independent, and to

make that possible all schools

must be staffed by devoted and

dedicated teachers, and gov-

erned by concerned parents,

who see that schools measure

up to the standards they want

for their children. Consequently

it is important that parents are

able to choose schools for their

children and not be limited by

the strictures of others, if they

are prepared to make financial

sacrifices. Parents are begin-

ning to have choice of schools

within the Government system,

which is good thing because

parents will be able to match

the school more closely with the

needs of their children. Such

choice lifts the level of account-

ability and will benefit the

quality of education generally.

Finally, schools such as Can-

berra Grammar School propose

that religion is not only the basis

for living, but it provides the

reason for living. As result we

believe that the freedom to edu-

cate in the chosen faith of

families is essential. hope this

new venture of the third Angli-

can School in Canberra thrives.

We also hope that by the time

you receive this publication

work will have started on our

new Senior Science Block. It is

most gratifying to see such sup-

port coming through from the

Foundation to make this ven-

ture possible. It is doubly grati-

fying because so much still

remains to be done in the way

of building in the future and we

urgently need laboratories for

the study of the new technol-

ogy, including the use of com-

puters, and we also need rooms

forteaching Photography.

You will all have seen or

heard of the tragic death of lan

Powell on the 19th January and

all members of the school

family will be gratified to know

that suitable steps are being

taken to commemorate his

work at Canberra Grammar

School with memorial fund,

which will be launched this

Term.

P.J. McKeown

Mr Arthur Kenyon, representing the School Board, accepts the first

payment of $50,000 towards the new Science Block from the President, Sir

David Hay.

THE FOUNDATION MOVES AHEAD!

MILLION PROMISED!

$50,000 HANDED OVER TO

THE SCHOOL

At the Foundation's Second Annual General Meeting held

in April, the President, Sir David Hay, presented to the School

the first payment of $50,000 towards the new senior science

building.

The building of the senior science block during 1982 is

most significant event for C.G.S. Not only will it be another

fine facility for the School, it is the first building project to

receive ■financial assistance from monies given to the Foun-

dation's Building Fund. While the Foundation has promised

$105,000 towards the project, it is hoped that new and exist-

ing membership will provide the total cost of $350,000.

Since the First Annual General Meeting held in June, 1981,

the Foundation has recorded an increase in membership of

more than 50% which has resulted in an additional $284,000

in gifts promised to the Building and Education Funds, the

membership now totals 188, comprising 176 Members,

Fellows and Trustees. There have also been 31 non-

membership donations.

The membership is recognised later in this edition of The

Red Hill Outlook and the Foundation and School express their

sincere thanks to all those members of the School Family

who have shown their support.

You too, can support the Foundation, particularly its most

worthwhile project —/the new senior science block. Please

take the time to read the enclosed brochure.
