Fix this textTHE HEADMASTER
Fix this textREPORTS:—
Fix this textAt this time, much interest is
Fix this textcentred on the possibility of a
Fix this textthird Anglican School coming
Fix this textinto being in the A.C.T. This in-
Fix this textterest comes partly from there
Fix this textbeing so many parents in Can-
Fix this textberra who are keen to have their
Fix this textchildren educated at an Inde-
Fix this textpendent School and presently
Fix this textcannot find a place for them at
Fix this textCanberra Grammar School nor
Fix this textat Canberra Church of England
Fix this textGirls' Grammar School. So far
Fix this textthere are 1,600 children listed
Fix this textfor the new school, which indi-
Fix this textcates something of the demand
Fix this textfor independent schooling.
Fix this textBut there has been oppos-
Fix this textition to the idea, as well as
Fix this textsupport. Judging by the letters
Fix this textin the press, some teachers in
Fix this textGovernment Schools and some
Fix this textparents with children there are
Fix this textconcerned because they as-
Fix this textsume that Government funds
Fix this textwill be diverted from the
Fix this textschools in which they are in-
Fix this textvolved. It is probably not as
Fix this textsimple as that and other issues
Fix this textget caught up in the debate
Fix this textbecause everyone can see after
Fix this textreflection that if Independent
Fix this textSchools closed, there would be
Fix this textless money available for Gov-
Fix this texternment Schools because it
Fix this textwould cost more to educate
Fix this textthose children moving to Gov-
Fix this texternment Schools. At the
Fix this textmoment 13% of the funds pro-
Fix this textvided for education go to Indep-
Fix this textendent Schools, that educate
Fix this textoverall 23% of the nation's
Fix this textchildren, so it is clear that the
Fix this textGovernment is not providing a
Fix this textdisproportionate amount of
Fix this textfunds to Independent Schools.
Fix this textThere are 27.1% of secondary
Fix this textstudents in Australia being edu-
Fix this textcated in Independent Schools,
Fix this textwhich is an increase of 2.9% or
Fix this text95,900 students in the last ten
Fix this textyears. Such an increase cannot
Fix this textbe simply due to a comparison
Fix this textof resources, as some com-
Fix this textmentators suggest, because the
Fix this textteacher-pupil ratio in Govern-
Fix this textment Schools is 12.25, as com-
Fix this textpared with 15.10 in Indepen-
Fix this textdent Schools.
Fix this textThe future of the nation
Fix this textdemands that we have the very
Fix this textbest schools possible, regard-
Fix this textless of whether they are Gov-
Fix this texternment or Independent, and to
Fix this textmake that possible all schools
Fix this textmust be staffed by devoted and
Fix this textdedicated teachers, and gov-
Fix this texterned by concerned parents,
Fix this textwho see that schools measure
Fix this textup to the standards they want
Fix this textfor their children. Consequently
Fix this textit is important that parents are
Fix this textable to choose schools for their
Fix this textchildren and not be limited by
Fix this textthe strictures of others, if they
Fix this textare prepared to make financial
Fix this textsacrifices. Parents are begin-
Fix this textning to have a choice of schools
Fix this textwithin the Government system,
Fix this textwhich is a good thing because
Fix this textparents will be able to match
Fix this textthe school more closely with the
Fix this textneeds of their children. Such a
Fix this textchoice lifts the level of account-
Fix this textability and will benefit the
Fix this textquality of education generally.
Fix this textFinally, schools such as Can-
Fix this textberra Grammar School propose
Fix this textthat religion is not only the basis
Fix this textfor living, but it provides the
Fix this textreason for living. As a result we
Fix this textbelieve that the freedom to edu-
Fix this textcate in the chosen faith of
Fix this textfamilies is essential. I hope this
Fix this textnew venture of the third Angli-
Fix this textcan School in Canberra thrives.
Fix this textWe also hope that by the time
Fix this textyou receive this publication
Fix this textwork will have started on our
Fix this textnew Senior Science Block. It is
Fix this textmost gratifying to see such sup-
Fix this textport coming through from the
Fix this textFoundation to make this ven-
Fix this textture possible. It is doubly grati-
Fix this textfying because so much still
Fix this textremains to be done in the way
Fix this textof building in the future and we
Fix this texturgently need laboratories for
Fix this textthe study of the new technol-
Fix this textogy, including the use of com-
Fix this textputers, and we also need rooms
Fix this textforteaching Photography.
Fix this textYou will all have seen or
Fix this textheard of the tragic death of lan
Fix this textPowell on the 19th January and
Fix this textall members of the school
Fix this textfamily will be gratified to know
Fix this textthat suitable steps are being
Fix this texttaken to commemorate his
Fix this textwork at Canberra Grammar
Fix this textSchool with a memorial fund,
Fix this textwhich will be launched this
Fix this textTerm.

Fix this text$50,000 HANDED OVER TO
Fix this textTHE SCHOOL
Fix this textAt the Foundation's Second Annual General Meeting held
Fix this textin April, the President, Sir David Hay, presented to the School
Fix this textthe first payment of $50,000 towards the new senior science
Fix this textbuilding.
Fix this textThe building of the senior science block during 1982 is a
Fix this textmost significant event for C.G.S. Not only will it be another
Fix this textfine facility for the School, it is the first building project to
Fix this textreceive ■financial assistance from monies given to the Foun-
Fix this textdation's Building Fund. While the Foundation has promised
Fix this text$105,000 towards the project, it is hoped that new and exist-
Fix this texting membership will provide the total cost of $350,000.
Fix this textSince the First Annual General Meeting held in June, 1981,
Fix this textthe Foundation has recorded an increase in membership of
Fix this textmore than 50% which has resulted in an additional $284,000
Fix this textin gifts promised to the Building and Education Funds, the
Fix this textmembership now totals 188, comprising 176 Members, 9
Fix this textFellows and 3 Trustees. There have also been 31 non-
Fix this textmembership donations.
Fix this textSTATISTICS:
Fix this textBuilding Fund:
Fix this text$208,000 promised
Fix this text$llO,OOO received
Fix this textEducation Fund:

Fix this textThe membership is recognised later in this edition of The
Fix this textRed Hill Outlook and the Foundation and School express their
Fix this textsincere thanks to all those members of the School Family
Fix this textwho have shown their support.
Fix this textYou too, can support the Foundation, particularly its most
Fix this textworthwhile project —/the new senior science block. Please
Fix this texttake the time to read the enclosed brochure.
