Introduction

Scope and Contents

The papers consist mainly of records of the Citizens' League, including minutes and financial records, 1930-1934, minutes of the inaugural meeting, 3 October 1930, and press cuttings, 1930-1940, relating to the League and to Federal Election campaigns. There are also miscellaneous items, including addresses and radio talks by members of the League, including Mr. Bagot, an address by E.J. Craigie M.P. on 'White Australia and Defence', attendance books for general conventions and some correspondence.

Another section contains the report of the Australian Trade Delegation to India, Ceylon and Burma, 1935-1936, records of the Conference representing Sugar Consumers, 1932, records of a meeting of the Australian Listeners' League and business documents connected with the following companies: Mt. Lofty Sports Park Ltd., Property Owners' Finance Ltd., Barclay's Syndicate Ltd. and the Progress Publishing Company.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The records were donated by E.D.A. (Alex) Bagot in 1965. Alex Bagot was the founder and General Secretary of the League.

Personal papers of Alex Bagot are held at MS 1754, MS 2603 and MS 4702.

Item Descriptions

Series 1. Minutes of meetings and financial records, 1930-1934

The series contains: minutes of the inaugural meeting of the Citizens' League, 3 October 1930, and of committees and conventions, 1930-1934 (items 1-9); financial records including balance sheets, revenue accounts, finance statements, and ledgers, 1930-1934 (items 10-18); and miscellaneous records including correspondence, attendance books, an address by E.J. Craigie on 'White Australia and Defence', addresses and radio talks by Bagot and others, and an anti-communist file (items 19-27).

The files are intended to reflect the organisational structure of the Citizens' League. It will be found that a file headed, for example, minutes of the General Council, may also contain minutes of various committees, etc. The contents of file have been maintained intact as they were received.
