Burnt areas on top of a sand dune on the eastern side of the island about a kilometre from Happy Valley township. The fire has burnt through more than 82,000 hectares of land in what is one of the worst bushfires to ravage the idyllic World Heritage-listed island in recent history. Queensland's Bureau of Meteorology said the fire danger is likely to be exacerbated by strong winds and extreme heat wave conditions, which are forecast to continue in the state for the next few days.
