As described by Gordon, this file 'contains material relating to my book on Dawn Fraser, published in 1965. Because I have been putting things together in some haste, I have not explained the circumstances of the New York publishers, William Morrow, becoming involved in the book. What happened was this: I noticed in a writer's newletter that John Willey, chief of William Morrow, was in Australia and interested in hearing about manuscripts by Australian writers. He stayed in Melbourne at the Southern Cross for a couple of nights. I wrote him a letter (the draft from which my wife typed it in the folder) pointing out that Dawn was pretty certain to win her third successive 100 metres freestyle gold medal at the coming Games. He saw me, he was enthusiastic, he wrote back. That letter is in the file. The rest flowed from there. Some of the early correspondence makes it clear that Dawn was a professional (and thus liable for disqualification) while she was still seen as an amateur'.
Correspondence, documents and newpaper articles regarding the Melbourne Sun News-Pictorial's 1034 campaign, 1970 - 1980 (File 10) - Box 2 (MS Acc02.143)
As described by Gordon, "documents, cuttings, letters relating to The Sun's remarkably successful road campaign, which had the effect of turning around the death toll. The campaign, which received praise around the world (even not so long ago in the New Yorker), began in 1970 and continued for eight years, until my departure for Brisbane. It aimed in the first year to cut Victoria's road toll from the previous year's total of 1034. Its theme was: "Declare war on Ten Thirty Four". Its success can be measured by the fact that the current Victorian road toll is about half the 1969 toll. It led to Victoria becoming the first government in the world to introduce compulsory seat belt legislation. What it really did was create a climate of concern about the road toll, which enabled the passage and acceptance of legislation that was thought (previously, and in many places for a long time afterwards) to constitute a restriction on freedom of choice. In 1977 the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons awarded me its Graeme Grove Medal for services to road safety."

As described by Gordon, 'documents relating to Contempt of Parliament case in which Douglas Wilkie and I were called before the Bar of the Legislative Council in the only case of its kind in a century. Documents include newspaper coverage, editorial comment, Hansard copies, letters. We were found guilt. Doug Wilkie died a couple of months ago, and the episode featured heavily in his obituaries. Also included is my typed version of what I would (and did) say in parliament, and my refusal to apologise. The affair took a comic turn when the president admitted the next day that he had the judgment typed in front of him before he heard us present our cases. A sequel came nine years later when the Legislative Council voted to expunge its earlier findings from the records, conceding in fact that it had been wrong'.

But quite apart from the significance of the case, the documents here contain a huge amount of valuable information concerning the rules and history of the Olympic movement internationally and in Australia'.

Series. Korean War
As described by Gordon, this series includes 'documents, letters, cuttings and a good deal more relating to my service as a war correspondent in Korea in 1950-51. A number of pictures. This will need sorting, but there's a lot of important material. One quite precious item is a small flag I was given to carry, first while flying on a bombing mission over North Korea and later during trips over enemy territory in small "spotter" planes. I have kept it ever since, but I feel the best place for it is with this collection. On the envelope I have wondered whether it would be more suitable for the AWM, but my own feeling is that it should be with this collection. Also included are a number of notes and dispatches as they were written under pressure in very difficult circumstances. Also some letters, and portions of letters, written to my then fiancée, whom I later married. She has since died. I have included these because they seem to describe censorship and other conditions as well, rather better than one was able to do in articles for a bigger audience'.
Series. The Hard Way
As described by Gordon, this series 'contains research and other documents relating to publication of my history of Hawthorn Football Club, The Hard Way. This includes correspondence with the then Prime Minister Bob Hawke who launched the book, and with historians Geoffrey Searle and Stuart Macintyre, who gave me appraisals of the manuscript. Collection includes book reviews, cuttings and couments. Also included arev transcripts of a number of tape-recorded interviews I did during research. While interviews in this context might normally be seen to be of state rather than national value, those included here relate to national figures: players and coaches who have been recognised by the AFL Hall of Fame, as well as club presidents. In fact two of those interviewed here, Leigh Matthews and Peter Hudson, have been named as Legends by the Hall of Fame. Hawthorn was the dominant club throughout the 1990s'.

Series. Cowra
As described by Gordon, 'the contents represent many years of research and involvement with the Cowra story. Some of the documents are from Australian Archives, but many have come to me in an assortment of ways. In the early days of research, some were slipped to me unofficially by involved people who were still uncertain whether they might be guilty of breaching the Crimes Act...
'There is a great deal of correspondence from a large number of people, including Father Tony Glynn, John Doncaster (whose father was killed by escapees), Stan Platz, Vern Northwood, Lionel Boorman (one of my intelligence sources), survivor Masara Moriki. Many clippings, taped interview with ringleader Kanazawa, interview notes, pictures...
'It took along time to piece the story together. At first I had to travel to Canberra to see the documents, and had to retype material on the findings and proceedings of the Court of Inquiry. Tony Glynn who features in correspondence (and in the book) was instrumental in bringing prisoners together for me to interview in 1993 for Voyage from Shame. Many papers here, including launch speeches by Digger James and myself, also Jim Killen...
'There are many treasures in these two boxes from a subject I beavered at over a long period'.
