BUNINYONG AND DISTRICT COMMUNITY NEWS INC

Issue 278

Reg No. A0034918L

September 2002

DISTRIBUTION 1200 COPIES

ABN 97 574 052 024

FIRST ISSUE 26/7/1977

SPRING BUNINYONG 1973-2002

Mr Ron Nicholls, who has restored Buninyong Town Hall's 87-year-old clock, makes final adjustment to the hands

on Saturday. He did the work free as gesture to the Back to Buninyong School celebrations on August 31.

As the bare winter trees and grey

skies are giving way little by little

to early pink and white plum

blossom small patches of

daffodils appearing and

wonderful sunny day to announce

spring on Sunday September Ist,1 st

2002 how much it reminded me of

Friday August 31 st and September

Ist1 st and nd 1973. The first school

reunion for 50 years was held on

that weekend.

The small reunion committee had

planned and worked for months

before. The town was ready to

welcome all who came and

identified with their Buninyong

schooldays and turned the occasion

into real community expression of

‘who we are now’.

Friday was warm and sunny and the

first challenge to winter was an

omen it seemed, for the success of

the weekend. The Friday night ball

was brilliant. Saturday’s

procession anticipated with the

confidence that it was to be the

“best procession ever” was by Ipm

quietly and irrevocably overtaken

by steady straight drenching rain.

Like seasoned troopers nothing

prevented the whole cavalcade

from continuing undismayed and

undaunted except the band whose

instruments filled with water and

who ran for cover along the route!

Nothing diminished the success of

everything. The dinner, the

overflowing school of former students with overflowing rekindled memories. The puppet show in one hall, the film

shown in another, the first serious collection of historical photographs in another, the lunch and the final afternoon tea,

the huge catering, the complete but happy Monday exhaustion. It was all the most tremendous success. The

community rose to the occasion with pride. This pride is illustrated no better than in the following article. It appeared

on August 13 th 1973 in the Ballarat Courier in the lead up to the Back To. Front page Ballarat Courier

13/8/1973. Buninyong’s town clock ticks again. The 87 year old Buninyong Town Hall clock is ticking again after

being out of action for more than five years. Mr Ron Nicholls, maintenance engineer of Christies Cool Stores,

Ballarat, who lives in Eyre street, Buninyong, did the work free as gesture to the Back to Buninyong School

Celebration which begins on August 31.

Council had been unable to find anybody who would quote for the job of restoring the clock in its original condition,

although one firm had been prepared to electrify it for $lOOO.
