'Lindersfarne.'

By

Robert W. Bell.

This is the story of pioneers’ journey to live in Buninyong. 1840 to 1914.

Although placed in historic context, the central character, his background, his property name and his family are all fictitious

Tart 23 of series.

Continued from the April 2007

edition of the Buninyong and

District Community News.

Five years had passed since John

visited Melbourne and had been

received by Charles LaTrobe. After

this time he returned to Geelong

armed with the title deed to corner

block of land in the town. It was on

this land that John built substantial

wholesale premises, in which he

stored and sold the stream of

merchandise coming in from

Britain.

John had originally come to

Australia with consignments of

goods, and over the next few years

he kept sending back for larger and

larger stocks, until five or six years

after his arrival he was chartering

entire shiploads of merchandise.

In the summer of 1846 he again

travelled to Buninyong with his

faithful dog as companion to meet

old acquaintances, and on the way

he made new friends in this rapidly

developing area.

Eventually arriving at the

Learmonth property he was amazed

at the transformation.

Because of drought and an

economic downturn, several

properties had changed hands. The

Anderson/Russell holding to the

west of Learmonth’s had been sold

to John (Jock) Winter, who had

changed the property name from

Waverly to Bonshaw. Winter who

had been butcher in Scotland was

‘canny’ businessman, and the

results of his labour were very

apparent. [Reputedly Winter was

later to become Ballarat’s first

millionaire and built the mansion

‘Lauderdale’, in what is now

Alfredton. Readers may be aware

that various names associated with

Winter survive to this day. Winter

Street in Buninyong and Ballarat,

Winter’s Flat, The Bonshaw

Restaurant, and in the Ballarat Old

Cemetery there is magnificent

memorial to the Winter family.

Auth.]

Then the Scott’s along with their

large holding had taken up winter

pastures at what is now

Warracknabeal. [The main street in

Warracknabeal is named Scott

Street in their honour, and because

of the Scott association we have

Scott Street in Buninyong and

Scotsburn. Scott’s Parade in

Ballarat has often been erroneously

associated with Andrew Scott but

this is not true. Scott’s Parade was

named after William Scott boot

maker and exporter who, of Irish

descent was prominent figure in

Ballarat East affairs.]

John found that there were now

several business outlets in

Buninyong. Along with the wood

splitters huts, there was general

store operated by Campbell and

Woolley. George Gabb had opened

an hotel and McLachlan and his

partner operated blacksmith shop.

[I find it fascinating that Gabb who

was previously shepherd on the

Learmonth property suddenly had

sufficient funds to open and stock

hotel. This, coupled with the

mysterious tale of shepherd in

Melbourne selling gold, could be

the answer to the question. There is

no doubt in my mind that gold was

being found and sold long before

the ‘official’ finding in 1851, and

that gold possibly financed many

station owners sudden expansion

and rapid wealth. Auth.]

Dr. Richard Power who had set up

his practice in Buninyong was

probably influenced to come to the

area by John Learmonth, brother to

Thomas and Somerville. [John

Learmonth himself was medical

doctor, and many later historians

fail to recognise that the holdings in

and around Buninyong were in the

names of John, Thomas and

Somerville Learmonth Auth.].
