LOCAL TOURISM TO TAKE LEAP FORWARD

Tourism in Buninyong looks set to get

significant boost when the new edition of the

Ballarat Visitor Guide is published later this

year.

This is the view of local traders and residents

who attended presentation by Ballarat

Regional Tourism Director, George Sossi, at the

Buninyong Town Hall on 12 July.

The new guide will highlight the historical

villages in the Ballarat area, and Buninyong will

be prominent with greatly increased information

and photographs of local attractions. The section

on Buninyong in the new publication will jump

from the present two paragraphs to nine pages

plus three pages of advertising of local

businesses.

Group Action

This change came about following action taken

by the Buninyong Progress Association (BPA)

which had expressed concern to Mr Sossi that

the Buninyong profile in the Visitor Guide was

totally inadequate.

Pictured left: Regional Tourism Director George Sossi

(L) chats after the meeting with local resident Merle

Hathaway and Tourism Administrative Officer, Jane

Verdoorn

"When visitors actually find Buninyong, there are

resources about local attractions available to

them at the information centre and elsewhere,

but so many visitors to Ballarat presently don't

have clue where Buninyong is or of its history,"

BPA Secretary Gayle Adams said.

"The expanded profile of Buninyong in the guide

will almost certainly result in many more tourists

making the short drive out here, or jumping on

#lO bus to visit the village," she said.

Meetings

The agreement by Ballarat Regional Tourism to

greatly increase the information on Buninyong

was reached after several meetings with Mr

Sossi, and after fifteen local businesses or

organisations agreed to provide support with

advertisements in the Buninyong section of the

guide.

The work to prepare the information for the

guide was undertaken by group of Buninyong

residents with Barry Fitzgerald acting as project

co-ordinator and writer, assisted by local

photographers Russell Luckock and Liz Lumsden,

with historical review being undertaken by Anne

Beggs-Sunter.

It is planned to print 150,000 copies of the

Visitor Guide which will be available through

tourist and information outlets both in Ballarat

and throughout Victoria and in other key tourist

locations. It is expected to be available in

December 2011. Details in the guide will also be

available through the internet and in other

electronic forms.
