Item Descriptions
Series 1. Barwick: contracts and business papers, 1981-93
Sir Garfield Barwick (1903-1997) grew up and was educated in Sydney and was called to the Bar in 1927. By the early 1940s he was recognised as one of the leading barristers in Australia and he appeared in a succession of major High Court and Privy Council cases until his election to the House of Representatives in 1958. He was Attorney-General in 1958-63 and Minister for External Affairs in 1961-64. In 1964 he was appointed Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, a position he occupied until 1981.
David Marr had worked in the Sydney legal firm of Allen, Allen and Hemsley, a firm that had often briefed Barwick in his years at the Bar. In 1977 Marr began to collect material for a biography of Barwick. In the following year he interviewed Barwick, but the Chief Justice later indicated his opposition to the project and provided no further help. Barwick was first published in 1980 by Allen and Unwin. A new edition by the same publisher appeared in 1992.
The correspondence in Files 4-10 was added to the collection on 23 November 2000. The correspondents include Sir Garfield Barwick, Justice Rae Else-Mitchell, R.R. Downing, Sir Lionel Murphy, Geoffrey Griffith and C.W. Pincus. Copies of some of Marr's letters are also included.
Series 2. Barwick: research material, 1954-80
The series includes notes, photocopies, cuttings, card indexes and other papers accumulated while Marr was researching his book.
Wherever possible, the original arrangement of the papers and the file titles have been preserved by the Library. To comply with the Library's preservation guidelines, some of the papers were removed from the ring binders or plastic files.

Series 7. The Ivanov trail: contracts and business correspondence, 1979-85
In April 1983, a few weeks after it came into office, the Hawke Government decided to expel Valery Ivanov, the First Secretary at the Soviet Embassy in Canberra, because his relationship with the lobbyist David Combe constituted 'a high security risk'. Combe had been Federal Secretary of the Australian Labor Party from 1973 to 1981. In May 1983 the Prime Minister announced that his Ministers had been directed not to associate with Combe and he revived the Royal Commission into the Security Services to investigate the affair. The Commission, chaired by Justice Robert Hope, reported in December 1983 that Combe had been a KGB target and that his evidence had not been entirely truthful.
Marr was assigned by the National Times to cover the proceedings of the Royal Commission. He was subsequently given leave to write a book on the affair, which he completed within a few months. The Ivanov trail was published by Thomas Nelson in 1984.
Series 8. The Ivanov trail: research material, 1982-83

The series includes correspondence, notes and drafts, including papers relating to a legal action concerning Marr's unpaid consultation fees. The correspondence was mostly with Chris Warner of Trout Films and Marr's solicitors.
Series 13. Patrick White a life and Patrick White letters: research: correspondence, 1985-98
In early 1985 David Marr began to interview Patrick White with a view to writing a biography. In May 1986 White gave Marr authority to collect White's letters. Marr had a number of interviews with White over five years and in July 1990 he brought him the draft of the book. White pointed out several factual errors, but did not request any changes. He died two months later. Patrick White a life was published by Random House in 1991.
Marr decided to publish a selection from the huge number of letters of White that he had collected for the biography. This entailed complex negotiations with many of White's correspondents, some of whom threatened legal action if particular letters were published. Patrick White letters, reproducing about 600 letters written between 1918 and 1990, was published by Random House in 1994.
The series comprises around 4000 letters (the majority faxes) relating to Marr's research and writings on Patrick White. It extends from 1985 to 1998 and is arranged chronologically in 88 bundles. The letters and faxes, including copies of those written by Marr, document Marr's life over nine years, as he corresponded with friends and acquaintances of White and dealt with all the problems associated with writing the two books.
Some of the correspondents wrote dozens of letters and they are often very lengthy. The principal correspondents are Veronica Brady, Paul Brunton, Geoffrey Dutton, Ninette Dutton, Chuck Elliott (Random House), Andrew Fisher, Peggy Garland, Graham Greene (Jonathan Cape), Elizabeth Harrower, Graham James, Heather Johnson, Matthew Kelly (Random House), Alan Lawson, Richard de Mestre, Anthea Morton-Saner, Jean Scott Rogers, John Thompson and Gerard Windsor.
