First Nation community names

Throughout this guide to the Michael Terry collection of photographs of his expeditions and travels; the National Library has used AustLang when referencing First Nation communities. AustLang is a resource maintained by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS). It provides a controlled vocabulary of persistent identifiers, a thesaurus of languages and peoples and information about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages assembled from referenced sources. AustLang headings combine an alpha-numeric code, assigned by AIATSIS to each language variety, and a reference name reflecting community preferred name and spelling.

For example – when referring to the Yankunytjatja people: the cataloguer has written "Yankunytjatjara people C4". "Yankunytjatjara people C4" is the AustLang heading. "C4" is the heading's alpha-numeric identifier, which remains persistent even though the heading text may be updated over time, for example if the name or spelling of a language variety changes according to community preference.
