HISTORY, GEOLOGY AND WILDLIFE

OF THE

ABERCROMBIE

CAVES RESERVE

The Grove Creek Falls

HISTORY

The Abercrombie Caves were officially dis-

covered in 1842, when Surveyor-General

Davidson was engaged on survey of Grove

Creek, which flows through the main cavern on

its way to join the Abercrombie River. This

official discovery (which was actually of the

Grand Arch) was not made public until 1844. In

1843 the caves were visited by Surveyor Wells,

who has been credited with discovering the

Koh-i-noor, Bushrangers', Cathedral and Hall of

Terpsichore Caves, and the Long Tunnel. While

the caves were not officially known until 1842,

the Grand Arch is believed to have actually been

found in 1825, and "battle" with the "Ribbon

Boys" in the caves took place in 1831. (For the

"Ribbon Boys." see page 3).
