LAKE BATHURST

25-10-70

If had to choosa text for this address

should not need to go beyond the opening words

of the Lesson:

"Let us now praise famous men, and our

fathers that begat us".

We remember the days of old, and in partic-

ular that 29th day of October, 1820, whan, very

close to this spot,

"in and immediately under the fly of the

Governor’s large tent, the Rev. Mr Cartwright

performed Divine Worship and gave very excell-

ent appropriate sermon, strongly expressing

the Justice, good policy «nd expediency of

civilising the black natives of the country and

settling them in townships."

sermon which, as someone remarked to me

recently would be quite topical today.

Most of you will know the circumstances

which had brought Governor Macquarie and his

party to this spot, ne and his companions had

come from Sydney, reaching here on 23rd October.

They were joined on 26th October by another

party, including Commissioner Bigge and his

secretary, Thomas Hobbes Scott, who had cone

from Bathurst, probably by the marked line which

Charles Throsby had travelled, from near

Canyonleigh to Bathurst, in 1819. The whole

party left on the following day for the Great

Lake, which the Governor named "Lake George",

"in honour of his present Majesty", and returned

to their camp here, on 29th October.

That they should, almost immediately, have

assembled for Divine Worship, would seem to

have been in accordance with the Governor’s

usual practice.

In his first address, after his arrival in

the Colony, "he strongly recommended all classes

to strict observance of all religious duties

and constant and regular attendance at divine

worship on Sundays and other holidays set apart

for the purpose."
