LITHGOW.

LITHGO'?, N.S.W., is 96 miles by rail, and 92 by first-class

bitumen road from Sydney, on the western slopes of the Blue Mountains.

Its elevation above sea-level is 3,017 feet; average rainfall 33 inches;

mean temperature: maximum 61 degrees; minimum 45 degrees. Its

population is approximately 14,000.

Lithgow was named after William Lithgow, who was Auditor-

General and an ex-officio member of the first Legislative Council in

1826.

Settled first in 1824 when land now within the City area was

taken up by Andrew Brown at Cooerwull. It was not until 1869, however,

that Lithgow as township dates.

Its industrial character was formed in 1837 when Andrew Brown

established his flour mill; twenty years later this was converted to

the manufacture of tweed and other woollen material and here today,

with modern machinery, cloths of beautiful texture and design are

produced.

In 1875 James Rutherford, western manager of Cobb and Co.,

erected blast furnace and started the Eskbank Ironworks. In 1894

William Sandford erected the first sheet-rolling mill in Australia; in

1900 he made the first steel and in 1907 built the first modern blast

furnace in the Commonwealth of Australia. The Iron and Steel Works

were later closed down and transferred to Wollongong.

In 1912 the Commonwealth Small Arms Factory was opened; Small

arms from the Factory were supplied to the fighting forces during World

Wars and 2. To-day the factory is recognised as the largest precision

engineering factory in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Lithgow Technical College has equipment comparable with

any other training centre in the State.

In 1889 Municipality was incorporated, the population being

then about 4,000; in 1909 the population had increased to 9,000 and in

1919 it reached 18,000. Lithgow was declared City in 194-5. Today

there are 4,100 houses within the City boundary.

The highest lookout on the Blue Mountains, 3,723 feet, is at

Hassans Walls, Lithgow, and this is also the most extensive one-point

view on the mountains.

The Great Western Zig-Zag, one of the most remarkable railway

engineering works in Australia, is at Lithgow and while only part of it

is used to-day it is still regarded as one of the State's most

impressive sights.

The railway was opened through Lithgow Valley in 1869 and the

line was electrified in 1957, the "Central West" doing the trip from

Sydney in hours, 37 minutes.

The playing fields of Lithgow cover an area of over 134 acres.

The Lithgow City Council was awarded the A.R. Bluett Memorial

Award in 1958 for being considered the Municipal or City Council showing

the greatest relative progress during the year.

There are 3,5'15 children attending the several schools in

Lithgow and environs.
