AUSSIES GET TONNLE JB

OUTLTE for the nine mile, `Australian` built, Tooma Hiver diversion

tunnel seen through Snowy Mountains Authority water pipe.

And here is £9 million which

will not have to go overseas

BRISBANE firm, Thiess Bros. Pty. Ltd., is working on £9 million

contract from the Snowy Mountains Authority the biggest ever let

to an Australian company. In gorge, I,(XX) feet below the high

ridge O'.i which the long lost Southern Cloud crashed, the Australian

contractors are out to establish tunnelling records Before the hiess con-

tract, the Snowy work had gone to American, British. French and Nor-

wegian firms.

The contract is for the ninc-mile Tooma-Tumut tunnel of excavated

diameter of about 124 feet, and an earth and rockfill dam across the

looma River about 225 feet high and containing some one-half million

cubic yards of material. So far, the Australian firm is doing well, In one

week’s recent tunnelling the teams drove total of 1,252 feet. Because

no central authority keeps records of tunnelling achievements, it is dif-

ficult to claim record, although it could well be one Sufficient to say

that the Australian effort was in world class no mean achievement tor

the first year of tunnelling.

When the first party of Ihiess workers arrived on the site in June,

1958, there was initial accommodation for 80 men and some access road

construction. Since then further access roads have been built (a difficult

job in this terrain), several camps, and Thiess Village, an attractive mod-

ern township set amid glorious mountain scenery. The village is about

4,300 feet above sea -level. It is 85 miles by road from Cooma, 30 miles

from Kosciusko, and it looks across to the Victorian border, some 16

miles away.

The village is sufficient to accommodate the 750-strong work force

including 80 families. The mountain school house has roll call of 60

children As in any remote township life is fairlv simple. However,

every effort has been made to make living more interesting [here is an

amenities hall, wet canteen, children's playground, films are shown and

this winter, the employees' ski club will be operating complete with ski

tow. But, behind all of this, the dominant theme of Ihiess Village is

one of great urgency. Apart from the elements, the big enemy is time.
