CYCLING GAZETTE

JST.S W.

Official Organ of the N.S.W. Cyclists' Touring Union.

Vol. 1., No. 3.

SYDNEY, DECEMBER 19, 1896.

rConducted by

S. G. Baker.

POPULAR PEOPLE.

Mr. ROEERT PATRICK.

THE ever-popular Secretary of the Sydney

Bicycle Club, whose “counterfeit pre-

sentment ” appears herewith, is leading figure

in all amateur cycling functions. Courteous

and obliging, he has hosts of friends, and not

single enemy. Mr. Patrick is man of many

parts. Those gentlemen who have toured

with him will agree

that as humorous

story teller he shines

brightest, whilst the

ladies who have

cycled in his com-

pany, or under his

leadership, will affirm

that he is most gal-

lant and attentive gen-

tleman. If such

thing were possible,

Mr. Patrick would

doubtless, by una-

nimous vote, be elec-

ted an honorary mem-

ber of the Ladies’

Club. It is to him

they turn when

guide, philosopher, or

friend (not to men-

tion escort) is re-

quired.

With the advent of

the pneumatic tyre,

Mr. Patrick gave his

attention to cycling,

and soon became so

enamoured of it that

he forthwith renoun-

ced cricket, although

that fascinating sport •

had received his un-

divided attention for

20 years previously.

Our cricketing readers

Mr. ROBERT PATRICK,

Hon. Secretary Sydney Bicycle Club.

will recognise in the portrait one who, for

many years was prominent member of the

St. Leonard’s Club.

It soon became clear to the practical mind

of Mr. Patrick that what cyclists were sorely

in need of was reliable road map and guide

book, and for several years he devoted his spare

time to touring, and noting the information

thereby gained with

view of compiling the

necessary maps and

books. Following

the example of Mr.

J. Pearson, Mr. Pat-

rick.- has generously

offered his accumula-

ted data to the Cyc-

list Touring Union,

that it may be inclu-

ded in the ‘‘Guide

Book,” shortly to be

published by that

body. Mr. Patrick is

man eminently

adapted to collecting

the information re-

ferred to above, for in

addition to being an

educated man of high

intelligence he is

keenly observant, and

above all is not im-

bued with the notion

possessed by riiany,

that the main object

cf cyclist is to ge

over as many miles as

possible in the short’’

est space of time. On

the contrary, he in

rational mannei ex-

tracts from his bicycle

trips all the joys and

benefits of which they

are capable.
