CYCLING GAZETTE

JST.S.W.

Official Organ of the JV.S. W. Cyclists' Touring Union.

Vol. 1., No. 11.

SYDNEY, APRIL 10, 1897.

[Conducted by

S. G. Baker.

Sydney Bicycle Club’s Opening Run.

'T' HE 'opening Run of the Sydney Bicycle

Club took place on Saturday afternoon,

March 27th. Twenty-six members and 34

representatives (of whom 20 were ladies) from

the various city and suburban clubs, mustered

at the Queen’s Statue to take part in the run

to Long Bay.

The Captain (Mr. James Trahair) assembled

the company in Macquarie-street, where

photo, of the group was taken by Mr. Kingi

George-street. This important matter having

been accomplished, procession was formed,

and start was made at p.m.

Over 70 riders were counted as they moved

past, which is record in attendance for the

opening run of Sydney’s oldest cycling club.

The weather was all that could be desired,

and the roads were found in perfect order, the

heavy rain the night before having wonderfully

improved them. The captain, ably assisted by

his sub-captain (Mr. A. C. Goodwin), and

Mr. F. Goodwin (treasurer) brought the company

along at very comfortable pace, via College,

Oxford and Crown streets, through Centennial

Park, and via Kensington, arriving at Long

Bay, at 3.45 p.m.

The “Sydneys” turned out in their new

uniform, and presented very creditable ap-

pearance. The colour, light fawn, is pecu-

liarly serviceable one for cycling, and the

change from the familiar dark blue will be

much appreciated. The Sydney Ladies’

Bicycle Club, not to be behind hand, also

sported new costume, which consisting of

cream cashmere blouse, dark skirt, and sailor

hat, presented very neat appearance. Each

member wore the new silver badge attached to

light blue bow, and the whole effect was

very pleasing.

An hour’s rest was indulged in at the Bay,

and an opportunity given for friendly converse.

The medical fraternity was largely represented.

Dr. Hodgsonf vice-president), and Mrs. Hodgson

Dr. and Mrs. Simmons, Dr. Gwynne Hughes,

Dr. Johnson, and one or two others. Amongst

League of N.S.W. Wheelmen), and Mrs.

Wootten, Mr. Harold Cochrane, Consul of

the C.T.U., Maitland, and large number of

other prominent cyclists, both ladies and

gentlemen.

Captain Trahair, having invited the chib

members and their friends to tea, an early

start was made for the Club rooms, 81

Elizabeth-street. The return journey, which

included run around the Centennial Park,

was completed by 5.45 p.m., and most en-

joyable afternon’s outing brought to close.

At 6.30 p.m., nearly 100 guests sat down to

tea in the spacious Club room, which had been

artistically decorated, and illuminated for the

occasion. Mr. W. R. George (president of

the club) occupied the chair, having on his

right hand Mr. F. W. C. Crane (president of

the Redfern Bicycle Club), and on his left, Mr.

James Trahair. Mr. Crane in few felicitous

words proposed the toast of the Sydney Bicy-

cle Club, coupled with the name of their

Captain Mr. J. Trahair. The Captain briefly

responded, expressing his thanks, on behalf of

the Club and himself to his friends, for the

manner in which they had supported his Club-

in opening their 1897 season. He also testified

to the pleasure it afforded him to seethe familiar

faces of so many of his old friends around

him.
