FISHERIES NEWSLETTER

SOUTH PACIFIC COMMISSION

Number 30: July September 1984

This issue...

sees the introduction of new regular feature, â€™Fisheries

Science', in which are presented condensed technical notes on specific topics

from recently published scientific papers and journals. Judging from the nature

of information requests received by the Commission, much material of this type

does not circulate widely among technical staff working in fisheries-related

disciplines in the SPC region. We hope that the 'Fisheries Science' feature will

help to alleviate this difficulty in small way, and the nature of the material

selected for condensation will very much reflect the type of information we are

most commonly asked for.

noticeable theme runs through this issue that of fish processing and

marketing, with particular reference to shark utilisation. The first of our main

articles (item below) was prepared by staff of the UK Tropical Development and

Research Institute in response to request for this type of information from

the 15th Regional Technical Meeting on Fisheries in 1983. The second (Item 5)

is compiled from informaton collected in response to specific queries on this

subject from several SPC member countries.
