THE RECORD
Fix this text“ Evidence seems to have given, in our day, a great mission to the Catholic Press. It is for it to preserve the prin~
Fix this textciples of and of faith, where they still prevail, and to propagate them where impiety and cold indifference
Fix this texthave caused them to be *orgntten . We urgently beseech you to assist, with all good will and favour, those men who
Fix this textanimated with spirit and possessed of sufficient learning, are labouring and publishing books and journals for the
Fix this textdefence and propagation of Catholic doctrine. ,y —Pius IX.

Fix this textWhy Pius Ninth declined to be called " The
Fix this textGreat."
Fix this textThe following touching and interesting letter from
Fix this texthis Holiness Pius IX. written in 1871 to the ex-
Fix this textSenator of Rome, Marchese Cavalletti, will be read
Fix this textwith interest: —
Fix this textVery decu Marquis a7id soft in Jesus Christ:
Fix this textThe manifold proofs of affection that reach me
Fix this textdaily from all portions of the Catholic world pro-
Fix this textduce in me the liveliest emotion, and compel me to
Fix this textthe sincerest gratitude, which I seek to gratify with
Fix this textprayers on behalf of the innumerable children of the
Fix this textChurch, for whom every week I offer up the
Fix this textsacrifice of infinite value the Holy Mass;
Fix this textand which, in compliance with the general desire, I
Fix this textshall likewise, God willing, on the 23rd of the pre-
Fix this textsent month, apply to beseech from him the libera-
Fix this texttion of this our beloved Italy from the many evils
Fix this textthat daily oppress her more and more. I was lately
Fix this textmuch surprised, my dearest son in Jesus Christ,
Fix this textever so truly affectionate towards this Holy See—
Fix this textI was, I say, surprised by the news you communi-
Fix this textcated to me, namely, that two new and entirely un-
Fix this textexpected proofs of filial love were about to be dis-
Fix this textplayed towards me by good Catholics—the offering
Fix this textof a pontifical throne of gold and the addition of
Fix this textthe title of “ the Great,” to the name of Pius Ninth.
Fix this textWith my heart upon my lips, and with the sincerity
Fix this textof a father tenderly attached to his children in the
Fix this textLord, I will reply in regard to each of these two
Fix this textofferings. As to the precious gift of the chair of
Fix this textgold, it immediately presented itself to my mind
Fix this textthat it would be far better to employ the sum' ob-
Fix this texttained by Catholic oblations in the buying off from
Fix this textconscription those of the clerical students who may
Fix this textbe compelled by a law iniquitous and unprecedented
Fix this textto enter the military service. The clergy form the
Fix this textgolden throne that supports the Church, and it is
Fix this textfor that very reason that the efforts of existing rul-
Fix this texters are chiefly directed against them, by means of
Fix this textspoliation and persecution, and above all by seeking
Fix this textto render the vocation to the sanctuary more and
Fix this textmore difficult, so as to render more rare the mem-
Fix this textbers of the ecclesiastical hierarchy, in order that
Fix this textthe latter, daily decimated by death and bitter trials
Fix this textand experience continual vacancies that cannot be
Fix this textfilled up to the extreme detriment of the Church
Fix this textof Christ.
Fix this textIt would seem that the present rulers had as-
Fix this textsumed the obligation of destroying all things and
Fix this textespecially those that have reference to religion and
Fix this textChurch. And while they are eloquent in
Fix this textpraise of, and provision for Ecclesiastics disobedi-
Fix this textent to their bishops or apostate to the faith, they
Fix this textpersist in an infernal system of hostility towards
Fix this textthe far greater number of the truly worthy, because
Fix this textthey are inimical to the doctrines of the persecu-
Fix this texttors and to their unchristian sentiments. But let
Fix this textthese blind rulers rush on the way to perdition,
Fix this textsince, wilfully deaf to the first outcries of conscience
Fix this textand become scoffers in order to ridicule the whole-
Fix this textsome doctrines laid before their eyes, they are
Fix this texthurrying down that steep that must conduct them
Fix this textto the profound abyss below. As to the other in-
Fix this texttention, that, namely, of adding the title of “ Great”
Fix this textto our name, the words of the Divine Redeemer
Fix this textoccur to my mind. He was journeying through
Fix this textthe various districts of Judea under his assumed
Fix this textmortal nature, and some admitting His divine vir-
Fix this texttue addressed him as “ Good Master.” But Jesus
Fix this textinstantly replied, “ Why callest thou me good
Fix this textGod alone is good.” If, then, Christ, looking upon
Fix this texthimself as man, declared God alone to be good,
Fix this texthow much the more should His unworthy vicar say
Fix this textthat God only is great ? Great from the favors He
Fix this textconcedes this His vicar; great for the infinite pa-
Fix this texttience shown towards Bus enemies; great for re-
Fix this textwards He prepares for all those who quit the path
Fix this textof sin to apply themselves to the work of repent-
Fix this textance; great for the rigorous justice with which He
Fix this textwill punish all unbelievers and obstinate enemies
Fix this textof His Church. Having said which, I feel it neces-
Fix this textsary yet further to dwell upon and confirm what I
Fix this texthave above alluded to, that is, the application of
Fix this textthe money which may be collected* not for the
Fix this textthrone, but for the release of the young clergy •
Fix this textand in the second place my desire that my name
Fix this textshould remain as heretofore, and that all men
Fix this textshould repeat to the glory of God Magnus Domi-
Fix this textnus et laudabilis nimis This is the wish your
Fix this textfather makes known to his most dear children
Fix this textwhile renewing his assurances of love and gratitude
Fix this texttowards them. It is quite true that this title
Fix this textwas bestowed on three truly great pontiffs, but it
Fix this textwas conferred after their death, when the minds of
Fix this textmen were more lucid and composed than during
Fix this texttheir lifetime. °
Fix this textL et these, then, remain great in the mouths and
Fix this textm the hearts of all, while I with my whole heart
Fix this textimpart to you, to your family, and to all good Cath-
Fix this textolics, the Apostolic Benediction.
