The bulk of the papers were donated to the Library in 2002 by Herb Feith's widow, Betty, and his son, David Feith. Also in 2002, smaller groups of papers were donated by Professor John Legge, Dr Gerry van Klinker and Daniel S. Lev.
Related Materials
Held in the Manuscripts Collection of the National Library of Australia at MS 2601 are the Records of the Volunteer Graduates Abroad, 1951-1965, which Feith helped establish.
Arrangement
Feith kept the bulk of his papers in titled files and this arrangement has been retained by the Library. The files have been grouped into series determined by the Library. Unless otherwise indicated, within each series files and papers have been placed in chronological order.
Dr Jemma Purdey, Feith's biographer and a National Library Harold White Fellow, provided invaluable assistance in identifying series and grouping of files.
Separated Materials
The Monash University Archives has a collection of Herb Feith's personal, research, teaching and administrative papers. The collection comprises approximately 14.5m (80 boxes) and includes files associated with the administration of the Politics Department. Material is predominantly from the 1960s and 1970s. Research and teaching files are largely related to Indonesia but there are also significant sections on Bangladesh and New Guinea. These files contain memos and newspaper cuttings, impressions and ideas noted on small cards, and segments of correspondence with brief typed notes. Lecture notes from Dr Feith's years at the University of Melbourne are also included along with numerous files documenting student political activities at Monash. There is also an extensive collection of correspondence with family, friends and colleagues.
The collection is housed in the Monash University Archives on the Clayton Campus, call number MON 78.
Biographical Note
Herb Feith was an Indonesian scholar, a political scientist and a peace activist.
Item Descriptions
Series 1. Family correspondence, 1951-2000
The correspondence in this series dates from 1951 when Feith travelled overseas for the first time. There are two volumes of his letters home from this period (some of which are photocopies). There are a number of letters from Feith to his family, written whenever he travelled overseas, in which he records details not only of his activities but also often includes comments on the political situation. In later years, there are letters written by Feith's wife, Betty, together with letters to them both from their children, David, Rob and Annie. There is also Feith's correspondence with his cousin, Lily Rosenow, and her family.
Note: files 11-12 and 19 contain a mixture of family and general correspondence.
Series 2. General correspondence, 1950-2001

There are several files of correspondence relating to Feith's involvement in the formation of the Volunteer Graduate Scheme (VGS), including with Oliver McMichael (files 126-132).
The bulk of the correspondence was maintained by Feith in alphabetical order, by name of correspondent. However, for the years 1996-1997 Feith filed his correspondence chronologically and within that arrangement, alphabetically (files 100-106). There were a number of items of unfiled correspondence found throughout the collection, as well as files of unsorted correspondence. This correspondence has been listed chronologically (files 107-125).

There is correspondence, drafts of papers Feith presented, notes and copies of papers by others. Series 10. Notebooks, 1984-1994
A collection of notebooks maintained by Feith is contained in this series. Two groups were written during trips to Indonesia, which he undertook in 1984 and 1985. The remainder were written during the period 1990-1994. They coincide with Feith's retirement and appear to replace the scraps of paper he used prior to his retirement to record random thoughts, reminders of tasks to be done and impressions of the day.
Series 11. Indonesia - general, 1958-2001
Feith's interest in Indonesia is reputed to have been sparked by William Macmahon Ball, under whom he studied as an undergraduate at Melbourne University in the 1940s. It led to a life long passionate interest and involvement in both the political and social fabric of Indonesia. As an academic Feith taught subjects relating to Indonesia. As an individual he gave enormously of his time and effort, undertaking numerous trips to Indonesia where he worked on a variety of projects, establishing networks with many prominent Indonesians, as well as with fellow Indonesianists from Australia and other parts of the world. After his retirement in 1990, Feith returned to Indonesia as a volunteer teacher at Andalas University in Padand and Gadjah Mada University in Jogjakarta. His special focus was on peace studies and conflict resolution.
This series comprises a large group of files containing papers on a wide range of issues relating to Indonesia. There are copious notes, cuttings, some correspondence and writings by others. Where available, Feith's file titles are included in the file description. A large number of the files, particularly the later ones, comprise miscellaneous papers grouped by year. Feith possibly had the intention of re-filing them by subject at a later date.

Contained in this series is a small group of files kept by Feith relating to prominent intellectuals and Indonesianists.
Series 13. East Timor, 1959-2001
Feith played an active role in working towards achieving independence for East Timor, following its invasion and occupation by Indonesia in 1975. In his submission to the Senate Inquiry into East Timor in 1982, Feith argued that Australian policy should be more heavily influenced by Australians involved in people-to-people relationships with Indonesians. To this end, he played a major role in the establishment of the journal Inside Indonesia, which became an influential source for information and opinion about Indonesia.
The massacre of approximately 250 Timorese youths in Dili in 1991 drew international attention to conditions in East Timor, resulting in an escalation of support for the independence movement. The bulk of the papers in this series date from this time onwards.
The files in this series contain papers relating to East Timor, accumulated by Feith in roughly chronological order, with most bearing the title 'East Timor'. The papers within each file comprise correspondence, cuttings, journal articles, writings by others and ephemera. There is also a group of unfiled papers comprising writings by others, which relate specifically to East Timor. They include reports, press articles, essays, testimonials and Hansard debates.
Series 14. Irian Jaya, 1976-1995
Feith took a keen interest in political and social developments in Irian Jaya, which was transferred from Dutch rule to Indonesian rule in 1963 under what was seen by many to be unjust circumstances. Files in this series contain notes, cuttings, correspondence and writings by Feith and others about issues relating to Irian Jaya and especially the fight for independence. There are papers relating to a project Feith undertook with Ian Bell to look at the roles international and transnational organizations were playing in relation to the Irian Jaya situation. There are also files relating to a 1984 seminar in Sydney entitled 'Irian Jaya - is far reaching reform possible?', at which Feith presented a paper, together with drafts, notes and correspondence of a paper entitled 'New conflict in West Irian', written by Feith, Ron Hatley and Ian Bell.
The bulk of the papers date from 1984 to 1985, a time of considerable tension in the region. Most files have the title 'Irian Jaya' and so are listed chronologically according to date range. Where available, file titles are included in the description.
Series 15. Burma, 1988-1995
Feith's files relating to Burma date from a period of widespread civil and political unrest in the country, which broke out in September 1988, leading to the imposition of martial law and the overthrow of the 1974 Constitution. The military government changed the name of the country from Burma to Myanmar in 1989 and multi-party elections were held in May of the following year. However, despite the landslide win of the National League for Democracy, the military refused to relinquish power and ordered that the Party's leaders, U Tin U and Aung San Suu Kyi, be held under house arrest.
In 1994, under the auspices of the Australian Volunteers Abroad, Feith spent some months on the Thai-Burma border training Burmese student rebels in peace studies and conflict resolution.
The files in this series contain correspondence, notes, reports, cuttings, newsletters, conference papers and writings by others, including Dr Alan Smith. The bulk of the papers are from 1994.
Series 16. The Gulf War, 1990-1991
Files relating to Feith's interest in the Gulf War Crisis are contained in this series. They comprise cuttings, notes, writings by Feith, press releases and correspondence . There is also correspondence relating to and drafts of a statement prepared by Feith entitled 'Australian-Indonesian Call for a Peaceful Solution to the Gulf Crisis', which was sent to prominent Australians for their endorsement.

There are also papers and correspondence from a workshop entitled 'Despair and Empowerment in the Nuclear Age' conducted by Joanna Rogers Macy in Melbourne in 1985 and to the Macy Discussion Group, which was formed following the workshop. There are also files relating to the Victorian Association for Peace Studies (VAPS) and to peace studies at Monash University, including the establishment of a Centre for Peace and World Order Studies.
