Fix this textQUIN ABBEY, BUILT WITHIN A NORMAN CASTLE.
Fix this textsix miles south-east of Ennis, the county town of Clare,
Fix this textis the village of Quin (in Irish —Cuinche, meaning arbutus
Fix this textgrove), which possesses one of the best-preserved ancient abbeys
Fix this textin Ireland. This village and the surrounding country was the
Fix this textstronghold of the Macnamaras and the Franciscan Abbey was
Fix this textfounded in 1402 by Sioda Macnamara inside the four towers of
Fix this textthe Norman Castle, three of which still exist.
Fix this textThe Abbey Church, which contains tombs Of the Macnamaras,
Fix this textconsists of a nave and chancel, with a tower in the centre. The
Fix this textcloister, with its ornamented buttresses and coupled columns, is in
Fix this texta comparatively good state of preservation. In 1541 Quin Abbey
Fix this textwas suppressed, and forty-three years later Donough Beag O Bnen
Fix this textwas brutally executed here by the Lord Deputy, Sir John Perrot.
Fix this textIn later years the Franciscan monks returned, and although their
Fix this textcommunity was again officially disbanded in 1651, the last monk,
Fix this textFather John Hogan, died in 1820, and is buried in the north-east
Fix this textcorner of the cloister. ,

Fix this textof Magh Adhair, the ancient inauguration-place of the Kings
Fix this textof Thomond, and also in the vicinity, near Ennis, is Clare
Fix this textAbbey, founded in 1194 by Domhnall O’Brien, the last Kmg of
Fix this textMunster.
