Fix this textNEWSTEAD ABBEY, WHERE POET BYRON LIVED HIS HAPPIEST HOURS
Fix this textNEWSTEAD ABBEY, Nottinghamshire, the ancestral home of Lord Byron,
Fix this textwas originally a twelfth-century monastery founded by Henry 11, who
Fix this textendowed it with a church and a large tract of land within the Forest of
Fix this textSherwood. At the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the reign of
Fix this textHenry VIII, Newstead came into the possession of the Byron family, who
Fix this textconverted some of the monastic buildings into a palatial residence.
Fix this textThe illustrious poet, Lord Byron, was born in 1788, his mother being
Fix this textCatharine Gordon, of Gight, in Aberdeenshire, an heiress whose fortune her
Fix this texthusband squandered. At the age of six years Byron succeeded to the title
Fix this textand to the estate at Newstead. - Here he was able to indulge in his favorite
Fix this textpastimes of boating and bathing in the lake within the Abbey grounds. It
Fix this textwas in this expanse of water that his great-uncle, the “wicked Lord,†was
Fix this textreputed to have thrown his lady in one of his fits of fury; she was rescued
Fix this textby the gardener. A description of Newstead and the lake appears in Byron’s
Fix this textunfinished “Don Juanâ€:
Fix this text“Before the mansion lay a lucid lake,
Fix this textBroad as transparent, deep, and freshly fed
Fix this textBy a river, which its soften’d way did take . .
Fix this textFrom Newstead the future poet was sent to a preparatory school at
Fix this textDulwich, and later, m 1801, he entered Harrow, where he stayed for four
Fix this textyears, and where he was known throughout the school as the ringleader of
Fix this textany possible mischief.
Fix this textByron resided at Newstead at intervals between 1806 and 1816, and in
Fix this text1818 he sold the estate to his friend, Colonel Wildman. The mansion stands
Fix this texttoday very much as the poet knew it. Over the cloisters, which are in a
Fix this textperfect state of preservation, is a range of galleries which lead to the great
Fix this textdrawing-room, seventy-two feet in length, where may be seen a Gothic roof
Fix this textdecorated in 1633 by early Italian artists. Byron’s bedroom remains much as
Fix this texthe left it, and some relics of the great poet are exhibited. Lord Byron died
Fix this textin 1824 in Greece, at the age of thirty-seven, and was buried at Hucknall
Fix this textTorkard village church, near Newstead.
