Fix this text/"VNE of the chief glories of Westminster
Fix this textAbbey is the Chapel of Henry VII.
Fix this textIt was built in 1502-1512 and is the finest
Fix this textexample in Britain of the late-Perpendicu-
Fix this textlar style of architecture. The superb fan-
Fix this textvaulting of its stone roof has been
Fix this textdescribed as a miracle of craftsmanship,
Fix this textfor although it weighs many tons it
Fix this textappears to hang like a delicate lace
Fix this textcanopy. Divided into bays filled with
Fix this textround fans, hanging lanterns and many
Fix this textthousands of traceried compartments the
Fix this textroof is a triumph of stone-cutting un-
Fix this textrivalled for the perfection of its
Fix this textsculptured detail.
Fix this textNo less magnificent are the walls, en-
Fix this textcrusted with tracery and decorated with
Fix this texta gallery of elaborate statues of martyrs,
Fix this textsaints, philosophers and kings. Along
Fix this texteach side of the nave are the carved stalls
Fix this textof the Knights of the Bath, each of which
Fix this texthas its crest and red and gold sword on
Fix this textthe front. Hanging above them and
Fix this textbringing to the Chapel a blaze of colour
Fix this textin red, blue and gold are the forty-six
Fix this textsilk banners of the Knights of the Bath
Fix this textwhose ancient order was reconstituted in
Fix this text1725 by George I.
Fix this textIn the centre of this magnificent Chapel
Fix this textis the elaborate tomb of the founder,
Fix this textHenry VIT. who died in 1509. The
Fix this textbeautiful craftsmanship of this tomb was
Fix this textthe work of Pietro Torrigiano, and is
Fix this textitself regarded as one of the wonders of
Fix this textthe Abbey ; it took six years to complete.
Fix this textAmong the many royalties buried in the
Fix this textChapel are Queen Elizabeth (d. 1603) and
Fix this texther victim, Mary Queen of Scots, who
Fix this textwas beheaded in 1587. There, also, are the
Fix this texttombs of Charles 11, of Queen Anne and
Fix this texther seventeen children. The last king to
Fix this textbe buried in the Chapel was George II
Fix this textin 1760.
Fix this textOliver Cromwell (1599-1658) was
Fix this textburied with all the pomp and ceremony
Fix this textof a king in the Chapel of Henry VII,
Fix this textbut after the Restoration his body was
Fix this textremoved and hung from the gallows at
Fix this textTyburn. His head, which is still in exist-
Fix this textence, was stuck on a pike on Westminster
Fix this textHall for twenty-five years.
