Fix this textTT'OR over eight hundred years Alnwick Castle, the great Border stronghold
Fix this textJ 7 of the Percy family, has stood on its ridge of rock high above the River
Fix this textAin in Northumberland. It is one of the most imposing examples of a medieval
Fix this textfortification in Britain, and during the days of Border warfare it withstood
Fix this textmany sieges. Before its walls in 1073 the Scottish king Malcolm II was killed
Fix this textduring an attack, and there, also, in 1174 was captured William the Lion.
Fix this textThe foundations of the original castle were laid by Gilbert Tyson,
Fix this textstandard bearer at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, but the earliest parts of
Fix this textthe present castle were completed by Eustace Fitz-John in the twelfth century.
Fix this textIn 1309 Alnwick was bought by Henry de Percy (from whom the present owner,
Fix this textthe Duke of Northumberland, is descended). Henry, the first Lord, restored
Fix this textand renovated his great possession, and his son strengthened its defences by
Fix this textbuilding the octagon towers on the keep. These additional fortifications were
Fix this texttirgcntly needed in the disastrous reign of Edward II (1307-1327), for after the
Fix this textBattle of Bannockburn the raiding Scots took revenge by laying waste the
Fix this textwhole countryside of Northumberland.
Fix this textThe garrisoned castle of Alnwick served as an important rendezvous for
Fix this textpunitive expeditions against the Scots, and was needfully very strongly fortified,
Fix this textwith its curtain walls, towers, moat, drawbridge and portcullis. The ancient
Fix this textPostern Tower, dating from 1309, now serves as a museum of Roman and
Fix this textAncient British antiquities, while the interior of the Castle itself is a treasury
Fix this textof great works of art, furniture and decorations. Paintings include those by
Fix this textTitian, Raphael and Tintoretto, while among the many objects of historical
Fix this textinterest are Oliver Cromwell’s nightcap and the hair-net of the unfortunate
Fix this textMary, Queen of Scots.
Fix this textThe third Percy of Alnwick was the first Earl of Northumberland who
Fix this textappears in Shakespeare’s “Richard II,” and with his son Hotspur in “Henry
Fix this textIV.” The powerful Percy family, in helping Bolingbroke to overthrow
Fix this textRichard 11, were rewarded with the greater part of South Scotland.
