Fix this textmany centuries this great fortress has withstood the ravages of time, of wars
Fix this textand of the elements, and today it still gives an impression of enduring strength.
Fix this textIt is a natural stronghold, for early documents record the fact that it was
Fix this textsurrounded originally by water, and ships could sail around it. During the
Fix this textpassing centuries, however, the sea receded, and it now stands like a solitary
Fix this textsentinel on the shore, surrounded by high sand dunes. The village clustered
Fix this textaround the base of the castle was originally a Royal city, for it was chosen
Fix this textas capital by successive kings of Northumberland.
Fix this textFrom earliest times Bamburgh was the centre of military activity by
Fix this textopposing British or Pictish armies, but despite this the Castle was favoured
Fix this textby thirty-four successive Anglo-Saxon kings as a royal residence. Bamburgh
Fix this textremained the capital of Northumberland for nearly a hundred years, and was
Fix this textfrequently besieged, but it remained unconquered by Danes or Scots, although
Fix this textthe surrounding countryside was devastated. In the eleventh century, after
Fix this textthe terrible harrying of the north by William the Conqueror, Bamburgh was
