Fix this textday, was in turn a rector, an archdeacon

Fix this textSt. Mary’s College it very early changed
Fix this textits name to Oriel, probably taking its
Fix this textname from a house called La Oriele
Fix this textpresented to the college by Edward 11,
Fix this textwho refounded the college in 1326.

Fix this textknown as the “skimmery,†which was
Fix this textunited to Oriel in 1902.

Fix this textfortune to Oriel College, amounting to
Fix this texta hundred thousand pounds, and founded
Fix this textthe Rhodes Scholarship to bring Anglo-
Fix this textSaxon scholars to Oxford. He believed
Fix this textthat the world could be saved only by
Fix this textthe reunion of the Anglo-Saxon race, and
Fix this textsince then thousands of scholars from all
Fix this textover the Empire owe their education to
Fix this textthis Oriel man.
