Fix this textHERSTMONCEUX CASTLE, HOME OF GREENWICH OBSERVATORY
Fix this textOne of the architectural jewels of Sussex is Herstmonceux Castle lying in
Fix this texta quiet valley eight miles from Eastbourne. Like Bodiam Castle, Herst-
Fix this textmonceux is surrounded by a moat, but unlike any other castle in Britain, it
Fix this textis built of Flemish brick, now mellowed to a silver-grey, and was one of the
Fix this textfirst to be constructed of this material.
Fix this textThe Castle was built in 1440 at a cost of £3,800 by Sir Roger de Fiennes,
Fix this textwho fought at the Battle of Agincourt and subsequently became treasurer to
Fix this textHenry VI. It was built near the site of a manor-house belonging to the
Fix this textMonceux family who married into the de Hersts —after whom the Castle and
Fix this textvillage are jointly named. Herstmonceux was designed as a stately domestic
Fix this textresidence and yet, with its machicolated towers and battlemented walls, draw-
Fix this textbridge and portcullis, it had all the traditional elements of defence. Its walls,
Fix this textover two hundred feet in length, were built in the form of a square, enclosing
Fix this textfour courtyards in which were the galleried living apartments, dairies, brew-
Fix this texthouse, kitchens and cellars. One of the finest features of the Castle is the
Fix this textimposing entrance gateway with its massive flanking towers. On the first
Fix this textfloor of the gatehouse is the Drummer’s Hall, so named because it is supposed
Fix this textto be haunted by the sound of ghostly drumming.
Fix this textMany stories are told to account for this strange happening, among them
Fix this textbeing that the noise is made by the spirit of a woman who was buried alive
Fix this textthere ; another asserts that the mysterious drumming was made by the spirit
Fix this textof Lord Dacre, one of the owners of the Castle, in an effort to frighten away
Fix this textthe suitors of his widow when they appeared,
Fix this textHerstmonceux has many tragic and curious associations. One of its
Fix this textowners, Lord Dacre, who received Anne of Cleves when she arrived in'England
Fix this textin 1540, was beheaded for accidentally killing a gamekeeper. A later heiress
Fix this textis said to have been starved to death in the room known as Lady’s Bower by
Fix this texther jealous governess. In 1777, owing to a woman’s greed and jealousy, the
Fix this textinterior of the great Castle was dismantled so that the materials could be used
Fix this textto build a mansion nearby. She anticipated that the Castle would pass to
Fix this texther husband’s heir and not to apy child of hers. Thus the Castle fell into
Fix this textruin until restored in 1933 and it now houses the famous Greenwich Observa-
Fix this texttory, which moved there in 1940.
