Fix this textAUDLEY END IS NOW
Fix this textAN ANCIENT MONUMENT
Fix this textTHE largest and finest of the stately homes
Fix this textin the County of Essex is Audley End,
Fix this textwhich James I described as too large for a
Fix this textking, “but it might do very well fox a Lord
Fix this textTreasurer,” the office then held by the owner.
Fix this textAudley End, near Saffron Walden, stands
Fix this textupon the site of a Benedictine Abbey which
Fix this textwas given by Henry VIII in 1538 to Sir Thomas
Fix this textAudley, from whom the house takes its name.
Fix this textThe estate passed to his descendant, Thomas
Fix this textHoward, who enjoyed the favor of James I,
Fix this textbecame the first Earl of Suffolk and amassed a
Fix this textfortune. He commissioned the architect John
Fix this textThorpe to design the great mansion and spent
Fix this text£200,000 on its erection—the equivalent to-day
Fix this textof several million pounds. At that time it was
Fix this textregarded as the largest house which had then
Fix this textbeen built in England.
Fix this textAlthough Audley End has been greatly
Fix this textreducfed in size since those early days it is
Fix this textstill an immense building and it has retained
Fix this textits Jacobean style in spite of alterations made
Fix this textby later owners. This unity of style is one
Fix this textof the remarkable features of Audley End.
Fix this textIn 1668 Charles II visited Audley End and
Fix this texta year later bought the estate for £50,000,
Fix this textalthough there is some doubt as to whether the
Fix this textmoney was actually paid. In 1701 the fifth
Fix this textEarl of Suffolk was allowed to re-establish
Fix this texthimself in the seat of hjs ancestors but the
Fix this textgreat palace was now too big for a less flam-
Fix this textboyant generation. The outer courtyard was
Fix this textdemolished and later this was followed by the
Fix this texteastern side of the inner court. The great
Fix this textarchitect Sir John Vanbrugh was engaged to
Fix this textremodel the Great Hall and a fortune was
Fix this textspent in successive restorations.
Fix this textAudley End, by sale and inheritance, passed
Fix this textin 1762 to Lord Howard de Walden, and later
Fix this textLord Braybrooke, who spent £lOO,OOO on further
Fix this textrestoration work, much of which was done
Fix this textby Robert Adam, The suite of rooms he
Fix this textdecorated remains as a splendid example of
Fix this textthis great artist’s work.
Fix this textIn 1950, this great mansion was bought by
Fix this textthe Ministry of Works and is now preserved for
Fix this textfuture generations as an ancient monument.
Fix this textIt is open to the public on certain days of the
Fix this textweek and here can be seen a fine library, the
Fix this textoriginal furniture and a valuable collection
Fix this textof pictures.
