Fix this textABANDON HOPE? NEVER, AT ST. ALBANS GATEWAY
Fix this textTHE city of St. Albans, which is situated twenty miles north of London in
Fix this textHertfordshire, is the modern successor of the ancient town of Verulamium,
Fix this textfounded soon after the Roman conquest of a.d. 43. Verulamium became the
Fix this textcentre of Roman civilisation in Britain and perhaps it was because of this
Fix this textthat Boadicea stormed the town in a.d. 60, laid it waste and killed 70,000
Fix this textRoman soldiers. Twenty years later, at the instance of Agricola, Verulamium
Fix this textwas rebuilt.
Fix this textThe name of the modern city is derived from that of a Roman soldier,
Fix this textAlbanus, who embraced the Christian faith, and was executed in the 4th
Fix this textcentury by his countrymen for having sheltered a Christian priest; he thus
Fix this textbecame the first Christian to suffer martyrdom in England. He was executed
Fix this texton Holmhurst Hill and there, in a.d. 793, Offa, King of Mercia, built a church
Fix this textand founded a Benedictine Abbey which grew in wealth and importance, and
Fix this textwas followed later by a Norman Abbey. Round this ecclesiastical centre
Fix this textgrew the medieval town of St. Albans to which succeeding centuries have
Fix this textmade their characteristic architectural additions.
Fix this textThe principal entrance to the Monastery of St. Albans was the splendid
Fix this textAbbey Gateway, shown in the accompanying illustration, and which is all
Fix this textthat remains of the many monastic buildings. It was built about 1365
Fix this texton the site of an earlier gateway and it was used for many centuries as a
Fix this textprison. The dungeons in which offenders were confined still exist beneath the
Fix this textbuilding. Until 1650 trials were held in the large room above the gate.
Fix this textThe building was the scene of a great riot during the peasants’ revolt,
Fix this textknown as the Wat Tyler rebellion, in 1381. A fireplace in a room on the
Fix this textsecond floor bears the arms of Charles I and here, it is said, one of the
Fix this textearliest printing presses was set up in a.d. 1480. The Abbey Gateway
Fix this textceased to be the town gaol in 1868, and two years later it became one of
Fix this textthe buildings of St. Albans School, for which purpose it is still used.
