Fix this textGRAND STAIRCASE, CHATSWORTH HALL, DERBYSHIRE.
Fix this textAMONG the stately homes of England
Fix this textfew can vie with Chatsworth Hall, the
Fix this textseat of the Duke of Devonshire, located in
Fix this textthe beautiful Peak district of North Derby-
Fix this textshire. The hall stands on the left bank of
Fix this textthe river Derwent, and as viewed from the
Fix this textwest presents a magnificent facade in fine
Fix this textrelief against the wooded ridge of Bunker’s
Fix this textHill. The building is in the lonic style, and
Fix this textthe principal part is composed of four
Fix this textnearly equal sides, surrounding an open
Fix this textquadrangular court, with a fountain in the
Fix this textcentre. Chatsworth contains some beautiful
Fix this textwood carvings by eminent artists. The grand
Fix this textmarble staircase is justly admired. There
Fix this textis a rich collection of sculptured figures in
Fix this textmarble from the chisels of many of the
Fix this textgreatest men. In the picture gallery are
Fix this textoriginal drawings and paintings of priceless
Fix this textvalue, such old masters as Titian, Rubens,
Fix this textRosa, Raphael, Claude and Lorraine being
Fix this textwell represented. The estate of Chatsworth,
Fix this textor, as it is called, the Park, is upwards of
Fix this text11 miles in circuit, and the gardens, among,
Fix this textthe most celebrated in the Kingdom, cover 12
Fix this textacres. The grand conservatory, an acre in ex-
Fix this texttent, created by the great Sir Joseph Paxton,
Fix this textis unequalled by any in Europe, and the
Fix this textwaterworks, which include one fountain with
Fix this texta jet 260 ft. high, are not surpassed by those
Fix this textof Versailles. The domain of Chatsworth
Fix this textis mentioned in “Domesday Book” as
Fix this textChatesvorde. In the sixteenth century the
Fix this textestate was purchased by Sir William Caven-
Fix this textdish. The mansion he erected afterwards
Fix this textserved as a place of confinement for Mary
Fix this textQueen of Scots from 1570 to 1581. That
Fix this textstructure has entirely disappeared and the
Fix this textexisting one was commenced in 1688 by the
Fix this textfirst Duke of Devonshire and completed in
Fix this text1840 by the seventh. For reasons that will
Fix this textbe fully understood, Chatsworth in recent
Fix this textyears has lost many of “the social glories
Fix this textwhich once were Chatsworth. How the
Fix this textpresent grim struggle for Empire existence
Fix this textwill affect its furture remains to be seen.
Fix this textVisitors from all parts of the world when
Fix this textin England inspect this superb ducal abode,
Fix this textand the successive owners ever displayed
Fix this texta willingness to view the countless treasures
Fix this textof Chatsworth and the wonderful beauties
Fix this textof the gardens and grounds to all who de-
Fix this textsired to see them, in which respect they
Fix this textdisplayed a public-spiritedness not seen as
Fix this textpossessing the owners of other great country
Fix this textseats who could be named.
