Fix this textCASTLE RISING, tranquil now, but once the centre of turbulence and intrigue.
Fix this textCASTLE RISING, four miles from Lynn, Norfolk, is attributed
Fix this textby one authority to Alfred the Great. The grounds for this
Fix this textsupposition are the arches,'still to be seen, which are characteristic
Fix this textof Saxon architecture. If this is the case the stupendous earthworks
Fix this textwhich surround Rising are of a later period than' the castle itself,
Fix this textfor they date from the Conquest, a line example of Norman camp-
Fix this textmaking. After the Battle of Hastings the property was taken from
Fix this textits possessor, Stigand of Canterbury, and bestowed by William I
Fix this textupon his half-brother, Odo of Bayeux. When Odo rebelled against
Fix this textWilliam Rufus the property was granted to William d’Albini; and
Fix this texthis son was made cup-bearer to Henry I. It is to him that the
Fix this textcastle is attributed; but whether the Saxon theory is true or not,
Fix this textthe edifice encloses a building erected before his time, that is to
Fix this textsay, before the middle of the twelfth century. The most interesting
Fix this textpassage in the annals of Rising is its connection with Isabella,
Fix this textQueen Dowager of England. Her husband, Edward 11, was on bad
Fix this textterms with Charles IV of France; and as Isabella was his sister,
Fix this textit was hoped that she would bring about a settlement between
Fix this textthem. But once in France she made common cause with the exiled
Fix this textLancastrians, and gave her affections to the most powerful of
Fix this textthem, Roger Mortimer. She came over with him to England,
Fix this textEdward II was deposed and was killed some weeks later, and
Fix this textEdward 111 declared king. During his minority Isabella and
Fix this textMortimer ruled England; and when the king reached the age of
Fix this texteighteen he sent his mother a prisoner to Rising for the rest of her
Fix this textlife and had Mortimer beheaded. She outlived her lover twenty-
Fix this textseven years, and was buried near him—with the heart of her
Fix this textmurdered husband, so they say, on her breast.
