Fix this textEditorial Notes.
Fix this textUndoubtedly the subject creating most interest from a pastoral
Fix this textpoint of view in Queensland and New South Wales, but more
Fix this textparticularly in the former colony, is the tick plague. Scarcely a
Fix this textday passes without the announcement in the press of the develop'
Fix this textment of the plague in some new direction in Northern Queensland,
Fix this textor the promulgation of a new theory as to the connection between
Fix this textticks and red-water, or the cause of their rapid and mysterious
Fix this textspread southward. Upon the nature of the disease, its cause, the
Fix this textmeans by which it spreads, the peculiarity of its severity at one
Fix this texttime and apparent harmlessness at another, there has been very
Fix this textlittle fresh light thrown in all the late reports and correspondence.

Fix this textThe action of the Queensland Government in prohibiting for a
Fix this textperiod of six months ail cattle from coming south of the 21st
Fix this textparallel, and insisting on the dipping and cleanness of all cattle
Fix this textcrossing the 24th parallel, is undoubtedly wise, and a most rigid
Fix this textand careful inspection of the cattle crossing the latter line is the
Fix this textonly way to prevent a spread of the dread disease to southern
Fix this textQueensland. In such a case some people must suffer, and although
Fix this textit will doubtless be most aggravating to a squatter whose holding
Fix this textis situated hundreds of miles from the infected districts that he
Fix this textshould be unable to start his cattle south until they have been
Fix this textcarefully examined and dipped (in a dip that has not yet been
Fix this texterected, or even contracted for), it is far better that a few should
Fix this texthave to put up with a little annoyance, or possibly loss, than that
Fix this textall the southern herds should be endangered.

Fix this textOne point in the proclamation of the Queensland Government
Fix this textwill probably cause considerable trouble, and it is not easy to see a
Fix this textsolution to the difficulties that must arise under it. Horses are
Fix this textincluded with cattle in the prohibition, and working bullocks are
Fix this textalso placed in the same category with those that do not toil. Con-
Fix this textsequently, no teams (either horse or cattle) will be allowed to
Fix this textcross the 21st parallel under any consideration, and those
Fix this textthat cross the 24th parallel, travelling northwards, will not
Fix this textbe allowed to return without being inspected and dipped.
Fix this textSeeing that the Central Eailway line runs all the way to Long-
Fix this textreach, about thirty miles to the north of the 24th parallel, wool
Fix this textteams will be unable to deliver the wool on the railway, and there
Fix this textwill consequently be no teams to take supplies from the railway
Fix this textout to the different towns and stations to the south of the
Fix this textimaginary line. One teamster has already been made an example
Fix this textof for crossing the 21st parallel, and fined £10; but how those on
Fix this textthe southern line will fare remains to be seen,
Fix this textIn ew South Wales hasty legislation, consequent on the scare
Fix this textwhich prevails, has wisely been checked by the Upper House,
Fix this textand an endeavour to proclaim wool, skins, hides, hoofs, horns,
Fix this textbones, &c., “infected stock’’ in the meaning of the Act has been
Fix this textblocked for the time being. Had the clause as carried in the
Fix this textLower House passed the Upper Chamber, all the above produce
Fix this textfrom any district which might be proclaimed infected by the New
Fix this textSouth Wales Minister would have been shut out of New South
Fix this textWales, which would mean a serious loss for the tanners and others
Fix this textconcerned in the various trades dealing with these products. In
Fix this textthis particular the Bill is to be amended, a new clause inserted
Fix this textproviding for the disinfecting and cleansing of hides, &c., before
Fix this textthey are admitted to New South Wales. There is really very little
Fix this textdanger from this source, as the process of salting and curing the
Fix this texthides effectually destroys all forms of parasitic life adhering to
Fix this textthem; but it is always better in such cases to be on the safe side,
Fix this textand to make sure that the introduction of disease is rendered
Fix this textimpossible by the spraying or dipping of the hides as soon as they
Fix this textare taken off an infected beast.

Fix this textWhether the cattle tick is indigenous to the Cape York Penin-
Fix this textsula, or whether it has been introduced into Australia by Asiatic
Fix this textcamels, is a matter we shall not enter into at the present time.
Fix this textThe plague is ravaging an immense area of the territory of
Fix this textQueensland, and the alarmists have already incorrectly stated its
Fix this textappearance in New South Wales. We think it extremely doubtful
Fix this textwhether much of the New South Wales country is adapted by
Fix this textclimate and other conditions to the perpetuation of the scourge.
Fix this textAnyhow, it is surely within the province of the combined efforts of
Fix this textthe Queensland and New South Wales Governments to arrest its
Fix this textmarch. Cattlemen have had a bad innings for many years, and
Fix this textperhaps the prophecy that “ cattle are sure to come again” may be
Fix this textrealised. If they do “ come,” they must have no ticks on them.
Fix this textWe think that the New South Wales Government would be wise
Fix this textin having an inspection—rigid and immediate—made of all camels
Fix this textwithin its borders, and compulsory dipping, if necessary, resorted
Fix this textto, although, it must be stated, no appearance of ticks in camels
Fix this texthas been noted in these colonies so far as we are aware.

Fix this textIt may not be out of place to refer once again to the Queensland
Fix this textPastoral Leases Extension Act Amendment Act of 1895, in order
Fix this textto call attention to the fact that the time during which notice
Fix this textmust be given to the Minister for Lands of the lessees’ intention
Fix this textto take advantage of the provisions of the Act expires on 23rd
Fix this textJune current. This notice does not entail any obligation on the
