Fix this textEditorial Notes.
Fix this textThe difficulty of procuring information as to how the Australa-
Fix this textsian wool and frozen mutton trades will be affected by competition
Fix this textfrom the River Plate has doubtless been felt by many of our
Fix this textreaders. We are pleased to be able to inform them that we have
Fix this textcompleted arrangements for adding to our “ Review of the Pastoral
Fix this textSituation” a letter from Argentina by a correspondent who has
Fix this textlarge practical experience of that country. His first letter appears
Fix this textin the present issue. In commenting upon the conditions of the
Fix this textcompetition between Australia and Argentina he says “ Argen-
Fix this texttina pastoralists do not at present see the importance of keeping
Fix this texttheir flocks clean and Argentine wool is therefore falling into dis-
Fix this textcredit in England, although the wool grown here is considered of
Fix this textbetter quality than yours (sic). Up till now sheep-rearing has been
Fix this textalmost altogether confined to the province of Buenos Ayres, and
Fix this textevery year the mortality through the two extremes—starvation and
Fix this textdrowning—has reached to millions not thousands of sheep.
Fix this textThis however, will not be so in future, for now the countless
Fix this textleagues of the Pampa Central are being taken up, and there will be
Fix this textno such mortality out there, so that within the next four or five
Fix this textyears we shall see the number of sheep and consequently the
Fix this textnumber of wethers frozen and weight of wool for export doubled.
Fix this textThe wool, too, from the Pampa will be free from anything except
Fix this textsand, there are no seeds or burr out there of any importance.”

Fix this textlx is some consolation to reflect that, if prices are very low, the
Fix this textprospects of a good season almost throughout Australia were never
Fix this textbetter. In Queensland, especially, there is a great deal to build
Fix this texthope upon, and we should not be surprised to see a phenomenal
Fix this textrise in the value of cattle stations before long. The experts all
Fix this textseem to agree that wool has “touched bottombut though all the
Fix this textsigns are favourable, there is no actual movement to chronicle.
Fix this textThe bi-metallists point to this as proof of the correctness of their
Fix this textcase, alleging that, with every condition favourable, there must
Fix this texthave been a rise before this but for the insufficiency of the standard
Fix this textof value. Meanwhile the feature of the year is the general
Fix this textawakening to the importance of the frozen meat trade, and a
Fix this textmovement to establish factories all along the line. In Victoria
Fix this textprojects are on foot for up-country chilling works at a number of
Fix this textplaces, with central freezing factories at Geelong and Portland.
Fix this textThe interests of the various districts of New South Wales are
Fix this textincluded in a comprehensive scheme for freezing at Sydney, with
Fix this textchilling works as may be required. In Queensland, the ambition
Fix this textof Charleville for a chilling works has been checked by the Railway
Fix this textCommissioners, who say they cannot afford to carry chilled meat
Fix this textso long a distance at rates which will pay the grower, but there is
Fix this texta good prospect of works being established at the Gulf.

Fix this textVictoria is at last awakening to the fact that her border stock tax
Fix this textmust be abolished, A deputation of farmers recently waited on the
Fix this textVictorian Premier to askfor its extinction; and they further suggested
Fix this textthat he might at the same time to arrange to remove the New South
Fix this textWales duties on produce. The Premier apparently quite sees that
Fix this textthe stock tax must go, his perception being assisted by the fact that
Fix this textnearly everyone else has come to this conclusion, and he also sees
Fix this textthat, under all the circumstances, he might as well spare himself
Fix this textthe trouble of asking New South Wales to remove her produce
Fix this textduties. The first effect of the removal of the Victorian stock tax
Fix this textwill be to raise the value of New South Wales “ store” cattle,
Fix this textowing to an effective demand for this class of stock from the
Fix this textVictorian “ fatteners.” The next effect will be to raise the value
Fix this textof New South Wales “ fats,” owing to the sale in Victoria of cattle
Fix this textthat would otherwise have been fattened and sold in New South
Fix this textWales. Queensland is unlikely to benefit for some little time to
Fix this textcome. The prolonged droughts in that colony have sadly thinned
Fix this textthe numbers of her cattle; and now that she has had good rains, and
Fix this texthas good pastures, she will, for a time, keep her cattle and increase
Fix this textuntil the runs are stocked up again. When that point is reached
Fix this textwe may again see the large herds of Queensland “overlanders”
Fix this textmaking slowly down the New South Wales stock routes for the
Fix this textVictorian border.

Fix this textThat the cobbler should stick to his last is nearly always a good
Fix this textworking maxim, but it applies to ministers of religion beyond
Fix this textother classes, because they rarely get that practical contact with
Fix this texteveryday affairs which produces worldly wisdom, and “ have
Fix this textnothing of politics but the passions they excite.” It was a sermon
Fix this textby a Nonconformist minister, who had become infatuated with the
Fix this textideas of the French Revolution, that drew from Burke his famous
Fix this text“Reflections” on the Revolution. The Revs. H. Tucker and C. Strong,
Fix this textof Melbourne, who are now advocating the nationalisation of the
Fix this textland, are the lineal descendants of those paper philosophers. Their
Fix this textintentions are excellent, and their plans would be to match if it
Fix this textIt's easy and takes two shakes of a lamb's tail!
