The Bulletin

“The Bulletin,” Vol 69—No. 3546

Wednesday, January 28, 1948.

Price 6d.

Registered at the General Post Office, Sydney, N.S.W., Australia, for Transmission by Post as Newspaper.

Seppelts

MOST famous of Scotland’s

storied Western isles is lona,

which had its fame long before

Edinburgh was village, before

William sailed over from Nor-

mandy. The fame of lona rests

upon its association with the

Christianising of the Piets and

Scots, for it was to lona that the first

missionary came. He was St.

Columba, who landed from Ireland

and founded monastery here in the

year 563. In the ninth century lona

was made bishopric in the province

of Trondhejm, when Norway had

rights over the island. Later, about

1507, the old bishopric having be-

come extinct, new one was created

and the thirteenth-century abbey

church of St. Mary became the

Cathedral of the Isles. During the

Reformation the cathedral was ex-

tensively damaged. The property

passed eventually to the eighth Duke

of Argyll, who presented the ruins

of the old cathedral to the Church

of Scotland, and in 1905, after

restoration had been carried out, the

cathedral was reopened. The Scot-

tish kings from the second Fergus to

Macbeth were buried here, and

among the historic remains is

memorial of Macquarrie of Ulva

with its effigy of chief in battle

array, the memorial of Lord of the

Isles with an interesting galley and

the monument of Macleod of Mac-

leod in the centre of the chancel.

CATHEDRAL OF THE LORDS OF THE ISLES ON LONA IN THE HEBRIDES
