Fix this textbuilt by Walter Scott out of the vast sums of money which he
Fix this textearned as an author. By 1820 Abbotsford began to attract pilgrims
Fix this textfrom all over the world; illustrious men like Wordsworth, Crabbe
Fix this textand Washington Irving being among those who came to pay homage
Fix this textto the great novelist.
Fix this textWalter Scott was born in Edinburgh in 1771 and studied law
Fix this textat Edinburgh University. He was called to the Bar in 1792 and
Fix this textmarried five years later. He first gained attention as a writer in
Fix this text1799 after the publication of 'his first book, which was a metrical
Fix this texttranslation of Burger’s “Lenore.” Three years later his volume of
Fix this textold ballads of the Border country aroused even greater interest.
Fix this text“The Lay of the Last Minstrel,” “Marmion” and “The Lady of
Fix this textthe Lake” followed in quick succession, and these metrical tales had
Fix this textan instant and wide success, and the writer began acquiring
Fix this textconsiderable wealth.
Fix this textScott now began' writing prose; “Waverley” was issued in
Fix this text1814, and this was followed by many such works, prominent among
Fix this textthem being “Guy Mannering,” “Ivanhoe” and “Kenilworth.” The
Fix this textauthor was created a baronet in 1820 and elected president of the
Fix this textRoyal Society of Scotland.
Fix this textIt seemed now that Scott would end his days in prosperity,
Fix this textbut unfortunately the publishing firm of Ballantyne, in which he
Fix this texthad invested his capital, was declared bankrupt, and the novelist
Fix this textfound himself responsible for a vast sum of money.
Fix this textDeclining many offers of financial help, Scott set himself to
Fix this textclear off the debt by writing further novels at amazing speed. His
Fix this texthealth, however, began to fail, and after a short trip to the Con-
Fix this texttinent he returned to his home in Abbotsford, where he died on
Fix this text21st September, 1832, and was buried at Dryburgh. The house is
Fix this textopen to the public, and is throughout intimately associated with its
Fix this textcreator.
