Fix this textFARLEIGH CASTLE, in Somerset, two miles from Norton St.
Fix this textPhilip, dates from the late fourteenth century, though the
Fix this texthistory of its site goes back much further, as testified by the dis-
Fix this textcovery of Roman coins and the remains of a Roman villa with its
Fix this textbaths and tessellated pavements.
Fix this textSmewin, a Saxon, owned the manor under Edward the Con-
Fix this textfessor (1042-1066), and at the time of the Conquest Sir Roger De
Fix this textCurcelle possessed it. In 1369 Sir Thomas Hungerford, first Speaker
Fix this textof the House of Commons, acquired it, and for many generations
Fix this textthe Castle remained the property of the Hungerford family. The
Fix this textfamily fortunes prospered during the reigns of Henry V and Henry
Fix this textyi, when Lord Walter Hungerford, who served at Agincourt and
Fix this textwas Lord High Treasurer of Cherbourg in France, acquired by
Fix this textmarriage the great Devonshire estates of the Peverells.
Fix this textThe Castle, which consists of two courts defended by walls,
Fix this texttowers, gatehouse and drawbridge, fell into ruin during the
Fix this texteighteenth century. The Chapel, pictured above, is, however, in a
Fix this textgood state of preservation, and is the most interesting feature of
Fix this textthe Castle. It contains a magnificent oak roof and some particularly
Fix this textfine altar tombs of the Hungerford family, whose violent deaths
Fix this textbear some resemblance to a Greek tragedy, for Lord Hungerford
Fix this textwas beheaded at Hexham in 1463 ; Sir Thomas beheaded at Bemer-
Fix this textton in 1469; Lady Agnes hanged at Tyburn in 1523 and Lord
Fix this textWalter beheaded at the Tower of London in 1540. In the Civil
Fix this textWar Lord Hungerford held the Castle for the King, but surrendered.
Fix this textAfter the Restoration Sir Edward, nicknamed “the extravagant,
Fix this textentertained Charles II at Farleigh Castle, and his son brought the
Fix this textfamily line to an end.
Fix this textThe walls of the Chapel are hung with family crests and a
Fix this textcollection of armour brought from Crecy, Poitiers, Agincourt and
Fix this textCalais. The Chapel also contains a Jacobean pulpit and examples
Fix this textof medieval stained glass.
