Fix this textRESTORMEL CASTLE, PART OF THE DUCHY OF CORNWALL
Fix this textTDESTORMEL CASTLE, Situated on the bank of the River Fowey
Fix this textin Cornwall, near the ancient market town of Lostwithiel, was
Fix this textbuilt originally in the year 1100 by Baldwin FitzTurstin, son of the
Fix this textSheriff of the county. The Castle at that time formed part of the
Fix this textmanor of Bodardle, which was later inherited by Robert Fitz-
Fix this textWilliam, Lord of Cardinham. In 1270 the Castle was granted to
Fix this textthe Earl of Cornwall, and in 1299 the Earldom of Cornwall reverted
Fix this textto the Crown. Since that date Restormel has belonged to the
Fix this textDuchy of Cornwall, as it is now known, and which forms an
Fix this textapanage of the King’s eldest son. In 1354 and again in 1365 the
Fix this textCastle was visited by the Black Prince.
Fix this textDuring the Civil War Restormel was garrisoned by the Parlia-
Fix this textmentarian army of Lord Essex which was holding the towns of
Fix this textFowey and Lostwithiel. It was captured on 21st August, 1644, by
Fix this textSir Richard Grenville.
Fix this textThe Castle Keep is a circular building about 125 feet in
Fix this textdiameter built of locally quarried stone and slate. The outer face
Fix this textof the circular wall which is eight feet thick and 25 feet high was
Fix this textfortified by a moat 50 feet wide and 13 feet deep. A series of two-
Fix this textstoried apartments surrounded the courtyard of the Keep. The
Fix this textgate in the square entrance tower was defended by a drawbridge.
Fix this textFive miles from Restormel is Fowey, a quaint and typically
Fix this textCornish seaport at the mouth of the River Fowey. At a remote
Fix this textperiod in English history Fowey was one of the foremost seaports
Fix this textin the Kingdom, and the achievements of the “Gallants of Fowey”
Fix this textrank with those of the “Seadogs of Devon.” China clay is exported
Fix this textfrom Fowey to all parts of the world, and its deep-water harbour
Fix this textadmits vessels of up to 13,000 tons. Fowey appears as “Troy Town”
Fix this textin the writings of Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, who lived here for
Fix this textmany years.
