EVERYONES

THE MOTION PICTURE AUTHORITY

Stuart Doyle Zane Grey Tie Up

Local and Empire Films: Woolfs Interest

CINESOUND breaks front-page news again this

week on Stuart Doyle’s get-together with Zane

Grey for the association of the world-famed

author on picture to be made in Australia.

Additionally, Cinesound will probably be interested

with C. M. Woolf’s London organisation in picture

which Grey will make in England on co-operative basis.

ZANE GREY and Mr. Doyle have been carrying out cable negotiations

for period and finalisation will be made when Edward G. Bowen,

general manager of Zane Grey Incorporated reaches Australia next

month. He leaves America on December 11, on board the “Mariposa.”

The idea is for Grey to fashion story with an Australian setting

anti sentiment, but which his wide understanding of world demands

will assure being definitely certain to embody international audience

appeal. The action is another important move in Doyle’s determin-

ation to build Cinesound into studio organisation of world importance;

his efforts towards this end in recent months have been such that not

only the trade but the public as well is focussing close attention, and

this will be maintained when the unit swings into active production

shortly.

In letter to the “5.M.11.” this week he revealed how his scheme

for Cinesound is to develop. “You cannot dig up section of the

Hollywood motion picture industry, just as you might dig up few

roots of cannas and expect it to sprout and blossom on the soil of

your own land as brilliantly as it was doing overseas,” he wrote. “If

that was all there is to it, Cinesound Productions Btd., my own company,

could easily to-day have been stepping out bravely side by side with

M-G-M or 20th Century- We discovered, however, that those clumps

of roots had an irritating habit of withering sadly before they could

be acclimatised —and our available capital withered in the same ratio.

prophesy, with every confidence, that it will ultimately l>e found that

only Australian brains, experience, and technical knowledge will build

up the Australian motion picture industry. And, after all, no true

Australian, on due reflection, would have it otherwise. Let us take

cuttings here and there from Hollywood and carefully graft them on

to our own growing stock, but we must first see to it that our own

roots have made vigorous growth; and can supply the sap to the new

stock we seek to graft. In other words, we must build up first from

within, and that is what Cinesound Productions Ltd. has been straining

to do over the past five years. We sent Australian experts to learn

from all Hollywood, and did not content ourselves with bringing one

or two from Hollywood to teach all Australia.”

S. S. Crick to

Contest Civic

Election.

S. S. CRICK.

SELECTED from 23 candidates to

represent the Citizen’s Reform

party in the Gipps Ward by-elec-

tion, Stanley S. Crick, head of Fox

in Australia, comes stronger than

ever into the civic life of Sydney.

His selection besides being per-

sonal tribute which wins congratu-

lations. also has significance in the

prestige reflected on the industry

by one of its leaders taking so active

part in pu'blic life.

Already Mr. Crick has identified

himself with many movements of

civic importance in Sydney, notably

the formation of the Citizens’ Or-

ganising Committee, on the council

of which he is deputy chairman. In

that capacity he was prominent in

the festival marking the opening of

the Harbour Bridge and the cele-

brations during the Duke of Glou-

cester’s visit. He has also been

actively associated with the City of

Sydney Eisteddfod, the Horticul-

tural Council of Sydney, the Tree-

Planting Committee, the Scout

Week and annual interstate band

contests. Mr. Crick is also patron

of the N.S.W. R.5.5.1.L.A., and has

provided much assistance for re-

turned men and their dependents.

Typical of his public interest was

the report he prepared for the Gov-

ernment on tourist organisation, and

the suggestions he made towards

inducing an increase in the flow of

visitors to the State; that was made

as result of impressions and

observations during his recent trip

abroad.

The Gipps Ward is one of the im-

portant business sections of the city

and was previously represented by

the late Sir Alfred Parker, Lord

Mayor, whose recent death created

the vacancy. Should Mr. Crick be

successful, and there is every pro-

bability that he will, every section

of the motion picture industry will

shower him with congratulations.

Because of his success in business

life and the fact that for years he

has evinced close personal interest

and understanding in activities cal-

culated to advance the city, Mr.

Crick should be welcomed by elec-

tors as the right man of their choice.

“Everyones” extends congratula-

tions, coupled with wish that

when the election results are an-

nounced, the trade will be able to

address Stan as “Alderman Crick.”

Lake Sets

M-G-M With

N.Z. Majors

Finalised by David

Lake, general sales

manager, now in New

Zealand, deal has been set

which places M-G-M product

for 1936 with the major cir-

cuits there. The Fuller-Hay-

ward, J. C. Williamson, Ful-

ler, Christchurch Cinemas

and other interests are cover-

ed in the contracts.

The negotiations were on

lines of the Dominion buy

last season, when the product

was sold in all the centres

of importance. Last year it

tvas pointed out that al-

though many of the units

were competitive, the quality

of M-G-M pictures assured

general desirability to obtain

them. “It was this friendly

spirit which motivated

speedy completion of the

deal in record time," stated

Mr. Lake then.

Kathner-Tdihurst

in Important Deal

on New Film

IT is understood that the prelim-

inary groundwork put in on

their forthcoming picture, “Falling

for Fame,” by Stan Tolhurst and

Rupert Kathner has so impressed

certain film organisation that deal

is on for the unit to be taken over.

If it goes through it will have an

important bearing in the progress

of local production.

Work on the film has been

held up temporarily following this

development, but casting is near

completion. Syd Beck has been

selected to play one of the leading

roles, and Tolhurst will himself be

chief comedian.
