This issue is of special interest, on account of the

variety and importance of the subjects dealt with. The

Contents.

reports from all the Australian States,

New Zealand, Canada, Argentina, and

Great Britain give concise idea of the

pastoral situation and prospects in each place, and the edi-

torial notes treat of matters at present uppermost in the

pastoral world. The illustrations comprise the most

notable live stock at the Royal Show, England, also the

prize-winners at the recent Melbourne and Brisbane Shows,

full reports of which are given. A.W.P. continues his

notes ‘On the Wallaby” in England, describing his visit

to the Royal Show, and to the Bradford Woollen Mills, with

Mr. S. B. Hollings. The special articles deal with im-

portant subjects. “ Arbitration and the Producers re-

views the attempt of farm labourers in New Zealand to

obtain an award regulating wages and hours for farm and

station hands. “Gambling for Land” reveals the very un-

satisfactory position in New South Wales in regard to the

leasing of Crown Lands. “ The Practical Aspect of Wheat-

growing,” “ Inbreeding,” and “ The English Hackney”

will appeal to large proportion of our readers, and pro-

bably invite discussion. Mr. S. B. Hollings has an article

“Are Tasmanian Wools Deteriorating?” There are nume-

rous Letters to the Editor, dealing with Tick Fever, The

Packing of Wool, Wet Wool Tests, Pastoral Requirements

and Chilled Meat, Immigration Under Contract, Stud

Stock, Ac. In the Literary Supplement “ Fife and Drum”

continues his interesting account of rambles through

thoroughbred aristocracy in the old country, this month

describing his visit to Newmarket. The Wool Department

contains an article by Mr. Hollings on “ Foreign Matter in

Wool.” The dairy information is quite up to date, and

the Frozen Meat and Stud Stock Departments, as usual,

make up very large portion of the “ Review.”

The season, as far as Australia and New Zealand are

concerned, has even further improved since our last issue.

The Season and

Prospects.

Beneficial rains have fallen in Queens-

land, Riverina, Victoria, and South Aus-

tralia, improving the outlook consider-

ably. The Darling Downs, however,

are experiencing seriously dry season, and stock are

having bad time. Hand-feeding of stock is still being

carried on in some parts of Victoria, and Western Austra-

lia and Tasmania are badly wanting rain. South Aus-

tralia is having splendid season, and the improved pros-

pects in the Riverina, and the rain that has fallen over

the wheat areas, puts far more hopeful outlook on New

South Wales affairs. In New' Zealand the indications of

warm spring are particularly grateful after the severe win-

ter experienced in the Dominion, and the production of

wool, meat, and butter promises to be well maintained.

In our last issue we published some remarks by Mr. R.

O. Blackwood, referring to the declining interest in sheep

Reform of Sheep

Shows.

show's. He is absolutely right in stating

that sheep shows are languishing in all

directions, and he hits the right nail

on the head by declaring that the varie-

ties in types of Merino sheep largely account for so many

breeders not showing. The types are so various that the

judges are called upon to make impossible* comparisons,

and in the end it is only natural that they should be swayed

by their individual experiences with certain types. But

the point of Mr. Blackwood’s article demanding special at-

tention is his original suggestion for reform, which is to

have non-competitive exhibitions of sheep. He says:

If non-competitive exhibitions of sheep were established in the

place of showing as we at present understand it, it is more than

probable that the system would prove highly successful. To give

such exhibitions start, it would be necessary to obtain promises

from number of the leading breeders to send in sheep in the

different classes. Such promises should not be difficult to obtain,
