EVERYONES

WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED AUSTRALIAN VARIETY AND SHOW WORLD.

(Registered st the General Post Office, Sydney, tor Transmission Post as Newspaper.)

V©L No. 233

SYDNEY, AUGUST 20 1924

HOY i'S DE LUXE George St. Sydneys Leading Cinema Home

Vkz Brains lo&kind

FIRST WIONALPME

Week by week. First National will, in this

you more of the thousand and one reasons tha

ment-

‘First National First.’

Believing that the box-office ‘‘pull” of

future will rest more on the director-producer’s name than on

the stars for the best stars badly directed, court failure

we will first deal with the big director-producer names associated

with First National.

Every name is reason for First National’s Leadership to-day.

Producers’ Series

FRANK LLOYD

Few men have to their credit as many money making motion pictures as Frank Lloyd

and yet perhaps up to year or two ago you did not know him. Lloyd has made over 55 produc-

tions, yet until comparatively recently his name has not shone in the electrics. Why? Not

because he hadn’t deserved it. certainly. man with pictures like “Madame X.” -‘The Eternal

Flame” (Norma Talmadge), “Oliver Twist” (Coogan), and dozens more* to his credit deserved it all

right. It’s simply this: In days gone by, il director did not head his own producing concern,

no matter what his genius, he got little publicity. The* star grabbed it all. But to-day the producer-

director is coining into liis own. The exhibitor and his public realise that the* success of

picture* depends very largely on the* director. And thus the* (lire*etor is just beginning to receive

his right.

To-day the name of Frank Lloyd stands second to none in America because America

has seen his life’s achievement, the* picture on which First National staked everything and gave

to Lloyd to direct “The Sea Hawk.” An American newspaper said “For ‘The Sea Hawk’

ale>ne Frank Lloyd stands seconel to none in the industry.”

That cpiite* apart from “Within the Law,” “Black Oxen,” “Ashes of Vengeance.”

\N

PM

Frank Lloyd is now making his own productions for release through First National.

Soon Australia will see and judge “The Sea Hawk.'’ We know what Australia's verdict

will be now!

Not mere names, hut men who create great things, baek of it make and keep
