Scope and Content
A statement of service of John Fryer, Master of the H.M.S. Bounty at the time of the mutiny, reputed to be written by one of his children. Dated Wells, Norfolk, 17 January 1839, giving in effect a full curriculum vitae of Fryer and commenting on Captain Bligh's harsh behaviour on the launch when cast adrift by the mutineers.
Background
John Fryer was one of those cast adrift in the launch with William Bligh following the mutiny on the H.M.S. bounty. Fryer and Bligh were on poor terms because of the promotion of Fletcher Christian - in rank Fryer's subordinate, to the position of second in command of the vessel.
