THE MONTH.

THE STUDENTS OF LIFE.

CHAPTER IY.

Love.

Are we not gazing on each other’s eyes

Nature’s impenetrable agencies

Are they not thronging on thy heart and brain,

Viewless or visible to mortal ken,

Around thee weaving their mysterious reign

Goethe’s Faust.

“ Eh ?” exclaimed, sitting up hastily and rubbing my eyes, as

caught sight of figure standing between my bed and the old Nor-

man window, “am dreaming ?” It was Lisle whose entrance

into the room had awakened me. As the cold clear moonlight fell

upon his features, thought that they looked unusually wan and

solemn. “ Lisle! is that you ?” asked in surprised tone.

“ It is,” he said sadly, “ fear am disturbing you, but some-

thing strange has happened,” adding in hollow whisper, as he

bent nearer to me, “ have seen Her .”

It occurred to me at the moment with pang that my friend

was losing his reason. begged him to be seated and tell me

calmly to whom and to what he .referred. “ Calm,” said he, “

can scarcely be, when believe that have just been brought into

actual communication with an inhabitant of the other world.”

“What! real ghost,” said banteringly, “nonsense, Lisle,

indigestion—brain sympathising with disordered stomach—take

pill, man, bathe your head in cold water, and go to bed !”

“Do n’t ridicule, now beg!” replied Lisle seriously, “ but

listen. No reality ever impressed me more than what lam about

to tell you. It is not an uncommon circumstance for me to be

troubled with sleeplessness—a sort of ‘ coma vigil’—but this even-

ing, was particularly wakeful on account of certain trains of

thought suggested by our conversation, which forced themselves

upon me. You remember, dare say, how distressed appeared

at your allusion to the scene under the laburnum. was pained

at the discovery that when the pictures of my own memory called

up voluntarily for the occasion were reflected in your mind during

the mesmeric phantasy, had not been able to prevent my
