News

QUEENSLAND SUPREME.

NEW ZEALANDERS BEATEN.

(By our Special Correspondent.)

Last Saturday’s result of the

first Queensland-New Zealand game

has set people in this State won-

dering what reliance can be placed

on football form. The visitors

were hopelessly outclassed from

the first minute, when Moores

scored, until the game ended at

43-19.

The Maroons reached high

standard of combined play which

was far too good for their oppon-

ents, who were now and again

applauded for good individual

efforts, but whose team work was

poor. The New Zealanders tackl-

ing was effective. Movements

were rarely sustained, and gener-

ally, there was an entire lack of

finish to their work.

GREGORY PLAYS WELL.

Parkes was injured, and Dufty

moved up to centre. His place

N.Z.

v.

N.S.W.

Next

Saturday

was taken by Gregory, who played

fine game. His fielding of the

ball at all angles was like that of

his cricketing namesake. Dufty

had seven attempts at goal, but

the best he could do was to hit

one of the posts.

Hall showed good knowledge

of the half-back game. Both he

and Wetherall defended well, but

the latter kicked too frequently.

Mouatt was the best of the for-

wards. Lowry finished 50-50 with

Henderson for the ball.

BRILLIANT QUEENSLANDERS.

Gorman, Brown and Duncan

Thompson were brilliant through-

out. Their play alone easily ac-

counts for the great success of

Toowoomba, which had eight men

in the side.

Moores, the Brisbane five-eighth,

who made his debut in this match,

did very well. He could scarcely

have done otherwise in such cir-

cumstances.

The gate exceeded expectations.

It amounted to £2,020, leaving

£1,865 after tax is deducted. New

Zealand gets half that amount.

To-day’s game on Davis Park

will find the attendance diminished.

The ground is unpopular and un-

suitable, in addition to which there

is the failure of the visitors in the

first game.

PREDICTION.

If the present form is honest,

the N.S. Wales side seems to be in

for bad time here at the end of

the month. The match at Ipswich

will be the only one in which they

will have chance.

(Continued on page 4.)

THIS SEASON’S PREMIERS.

J. Lodge, H. Cavanagh, P. Murphy, V. Lawrence, A. Righton, F. Brogan, J. Lawrence, B. Wearing,

O. Quinlivan, A. Carr, A. Thorrtpson, E. Lapham, A. Blair (cape.).
