Fix this textBLENHEIM PALACE.
Fix this textF the great ducal palaces of England, none drew
Fix this textitself more attention during the second World
Fix this textWar than the noble pile, the gift of the nation to the
Fix this textfirst Duke of Marlborough, in recognition of his
Fix this textgreat victory at Blenheim in 1704 when “he saved
Fix this textEurope” and brought to a close the war of the Spanish
Fix this textSuccession, caused by an ambition on the part of the
Fix this textFrench royal house which, it was held, would have
Fix this textreduced Europe, or the Western section of it, to the
Fix this textposition of a French Vassalage. The site of the Battle
Fix this textof Blenheim was, in the Nazi thrust for world
Fix this textdominion, placed again in war’s arena, as the Bavarian
Fix this textvillage lies on the Danube, a river fateful in history. The
Fix this textbuilding, regarded as the masterpiece of the architect,
Fix this textSir John Vanburgh, and towards the erection of which
Fix this textParliament voted £500,000, stands in a park of 2750
Fix this textacres which is 12 miles in circuit. The father of the
Fix this texthero of Blenheim was a Sir Winston Churchill, and
Fix this textthe present Prime Minister is a son of the second son
Fix this textof the Bth Duke, hence Blenheim may be regarded
Fix this textmuch in the light of his ancestral home. As to the
Fix this textartistic merits of the palace, opinions have everjaesn
Fix this texthopelessly at variance. The style is Italo-Corinthian.
Fix this textThe usual approach is through a triumphal arch
Fix this textwhence is presented a striking view of the mansion,
Fix this textin front of which stands a sculptured column, 130 ft.
Fix this texthigh, surmounted by a statue of the duke, whose
Fix this textvictories and achievements are recorded on tablets
Fix this textround the base. The front of the palace is 348 ft. from
Fix this textwing to wing. A few words as to the magnificent
Fix this textinterior: The hall, supported by Corinthian pillars, is
Fix this text67ft. high, the design of the painting on the ceiling,
Fix this textthe work of Sir James Thornhill, representing Victory
Fix this textcrowning the duke. The gallery and bow window
Fix this textrooms abound in portraits by the most eminent
Fix this textmasters, foreign and British; on the tapestry of the
Fix this textlatter room are figured tfre battles gained by the duke,
Fix this textespecially that of Blenheim. The saloon, which com-
Fix this textmunicates with the hall, occupies the entire breadth
Fix this textof the centre. The lower part is lined with marble,
Fix this textand six of its compartments are decorated with pic-
Fix this texttures by Le Guerre, depicting the inhabitants of the
Fix this textdifferent nations of the world in appropriate costumes.
Fix this textOn the ceiling is a representation by the same artist
Fix this textof the victorious duke arrested in his career by Peace
Fix this textand Time. Other apartments greatly admired by the
Fix this textvisitor are the library, theatre, state drawing-room,
Fix this textblue-and-green drawing-room, grand cabinet, dining-
Fix this textroom and dressing-room, a description of which,
Fix this textincluding pictures, statues, grand articles of vertue
Fix this textand splendid furniture, would require a volume. In
Fix this textthe chapel, forming one of the wings, is a fine marble
Fix this textmonument by Rysbrack to the great duke and his
Fix this textalmost equally celebrated duchess, Sarah. The gardens
Fix this textare wonderful, and the plantations are said to represent
Fix this textthe positions of the troops on the battlefield of Blen-
Fix this textheim. The following appears, with other epitaphs on
Fix this textthe great Duke of Marlborough, in “A Guide to Blen-
Fix this textheim and Woodstock,” published at Oxford in 1757:?
Fix this text(From the Latin.)
Fix this text“The grateful antients him a god declar’d
Fix this textWho wisely counsell’d or who bravely wan'd;
Fix this textHence Greece her Mars and Pallas deify’d,
Fix this textMade him the hero, her the patriot’s guide;
Fix this textAntients, within this urn a mortal lies:' —
Fix this textShow me his peer among your deities.”
