Education

PAST PRESENT FUTURE

Journal of the N.S.W. Teachers' Federation

Registered at the General Post Office, Sydney, for transmission by post/ as newspaper.

Vol. 38—No. 7.

JUNE 12, 1957

Price: 3d.

Huge Conference Voiced State-wide Demand

For End To Education’s Financial Starvation

The largest delegate conference in Australia's history

met in the Sydney Town Hall on Saturday, June 1, to

review education's present serious plight and to resolve

on action to secure adequate financial allocations for

primary, scondary, technical and tertiary education in

the forthcoming financial year.

The crowded Town Hall and the 500 other delegates

who heard the speeches relayed in an overflow meeting

in the Chapter House next door warmly applauded the

Minister's opening statement that "education-minded

people all over Australia are clamouring for much better

financial deal for education in the certain knowledge

that nation's progress and safety are best assured in

the hands of an educated and trained populace."

Loud applause greeted the statement by Professor

At the Town Hall steps: delegates arrive for the Education Conference,

Roberts, Vice Chancellor, University of Sydney: "They

tell me there are constitutional difficulties; say this is

the most arrant humbug, hooey and nonsense. If there

are constitutional difficulties, then the heads of Aust-

ralian universities should be in gaol, because it is no

more illegal to take £500,000 from the Commonwealth

Government, as the University of Sydney has done, than

it is to take £5,000,000."

The Lord Mayor of Sydney, Alderman H. F. Jensen,

who presided at the opening session, said the responsi-

bility of those who teach is very great indeed, and the

responsibility of the citizens in understanding the needs

of education is also great.

"I extend to you congratulations because your pre-

sence here today indicates that there is in our community

an awareness of these things," Alderman Jensen said.

The subsequent sessions were chaired in turn by

Mrs. L. J. Brown, President of the Federation of Infants'

and Nursery School Clubs, Mr. S. F. E. Liebert, President

of the Federation of Parents and Citizens' Associations,

and Mr. D. A. Taylor, President of the Teachers' Federa-

tion.

In resolutions adopted unanimously the Conference

expressed alarm at accommodation deficiencies, teacher

shortage, drastic cuts in educational services, crisis con-

ditions and grossly inadequate financial allocations for

education.

It decided that approaches be made to the Prime

Minister, the Premier, the Opposition Leaders in the

Federal and State Parliaments and members of Federal

and State Parliaments. It requested all delegates to

report back to their organisations with the purpose of

securing their organisations' endorsement of the Confer-

ence decisions and to inform the Prime Minister, Premier,

Opposition Leaders and Federal and State members of

Parliament of that endorsement.
