SYDNEY, JUNE sth, 1922

Price—Threepence

Lesson to be Learned by our

New Zealand Friends.

As Rugby in New Zealand is now

in the throes of an upheaval similar

to the one that brought into being

that'great organisation—the N.S.W.

Rugby Football League and our

friends across the Tasman are hav-

ing all manner of obstacles placed

in the way of the advancement of

the thirteen-a-side code by its op-

ponents, who seem determined to

stop at nothing to attain their ob-

ject, the following will give some

idea of the similar conditions that

prevailed in this State: —

The accusation was freely made

then as to-day that the League was

originally formed by band of “mal-

contents” (as we were told by one

leading Union official) in the latter

part of 1907 to play against Basker-

ville’s team of All Blacks, then on

their ay to England.

The original meetings were held

in camera, and it was with very

stealthy manner that members ap-

proached the meeting-place, which

was at Bateman’s Hotel, George-

street, At that time, funds were

practically non cst, and it was with

feelings of great glee at the pros-

pects of good round sum (say

about £10) per man per match

which was practically assured

that the selected fortunates drank

success to the movement.

Meetings were subsequently held

in small room (about 10 8)

over Victor Trumper’s shop in Mar-

ket-street, where is w'as amusing to

see those fiery “malcontents” carry-

ing chairs across the road, for the

furniture was not of sufficient

quantity to carry the full meet-

ings, and extras had to be borrow-

ed.

Well, as all things must come to

an end, so did the series of

matches, and it was with feelings

of intense disappointment that the

players of those games, who were

the pioneers of that great institu-

tion, the N.S.W. Rugby Football

League, learned that they would be

in the happy position of having to

receive the magnificent sum of £1

per match. This more so, as at

least one of the players had al-

ready laid out the sum of £29 in

imaginary purchases.

Time wore on, and all through

the summer nights, in that small

10 8, that band of pioneers swel-

tered and worked to draft con-

stitution to enable the League to

carry on when once formed.

However, the League was launch-

ed in the following season, and the

task of introducing new game

was commenced in earnest. The
