Fix this textSADLER’S WELLS, FAMOUS THEATRE OF BALLET
Fix this textBRITAIN’S world-famous national ballet-company takes its name from
Fix this textits place of origin, the old-established Sadler’s Wells Theatre at
Fix this textIslington, in north-east London.
Fix this textThe present theatre, opened in 1931, is the latest of a succession of
Fix this textplaces of entertainment which occupied the site since 1638. In that year a
Fix this textmineral spring was discovered on the spot and its possibilities were exploited
Fix this textby a Thomas Sadler, who provided musical and theatrical distractions for
Fix this textthose taking the medicinal waters —the well still survives today. In 1765
Fix this textthe original Music House, as it was called, was replaced by the first theatre,
Fix this textand this building had a varied history. It was there that Grimaldi, the
Fix this textfamous clown, gave his first performance in 1781 and also his last in 1805.
Fix this textIn the early years of the 19th century many equestrian acts were staged there
Fix this textand, under the management of Samuel. Phelps, the theatre achieved its
Fix this textgreatest fame by the production of thirty-four of Shakspeare’s plays. Part
Fix this textof this theatre is incorporated in the modern building, which has a stone
Fix this textrelief over the entrance portraying Drama.
Fix this textWhen the modern theatre was opened in 1931 it was managed in con-
Fix this textjunction with the Old Vic Theatre in south London by Lilian Baylis. Both
Fix this texttheatres had the same aim—to present first-class performances of opera and
Fix this textclassical plays at the lowest possible prices. Soon, however, it was decided
Fix this textto concentrate opera at the Wells and drama at the Vic. There was ballet,
Fix this texttoo, at the Wells, for in the year of the new theatre’s inauguration the
Fix this textSadler’s Wells Ballet (originally the Vic-Wells Ballet) gave its first full-
Fix this textevening performance.
Fix this textAfter the Second World War the Sadler’s Wells Ballet, now recognised
Fix this textas the leading company in Britain, was transferred to the Royal Opera
Fix this textHouse, Covent Garden. But ballet was not lost to the Wells, for a new
Fix this textcompany was formed —the Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet, which, in the few
Fix this textyears of its existence, has become almost as widely celebrated as the parent
Fix this textcompany and has had several overseas .tours already to its credit.
